Sore Throat Medicines

What causes a sore throat?

A sore throat can develop for several different reasons. The most common causes are:

  • Viral infections: Viruses like coughs, colds, or flu typically come with a sore throat, which is one of the first symptoms. These infections account for about 85%-95% of all sore throats.
  • Bacterial infections: Strep throat, caused by Streptococcus bacteria, causes intense throat pain, difficulty swallowing, and often a fever. Unlike viral infections, bacterial infections may need antibiotics.
  • Hay Fever and Allergies: Pollen, dust, and pet dander can trigger postnasal drip, irritating the throat and causing inflammation and discomfort.
  • Environmental factors: Dry air, smoking, air pollution, and shouting or speaking loudly for extended periods can all irritate the throat lining.
  • Acid reflux: When stomach acid flows back up into the oesophagus, it can cause a burning sensation and soreness, particularly in the morning.

How to Soothe a Sore Throat

When a sore throat hits, finding quick relief is a top priority. At Click2Pharmacy, we stock a variety of effective over-the-counter treatments to ease your discomfort while you recover.

Throat Lozenges

Throat lozenges are a popular first line of defence against sore throat pain. These slowly dissolving medications release active ingredients that numb discomfort and reduce inflammation. Options like Halls Soothers provide cooling menthol relief in various flavours, while Strepsils contain antiseptic ingredients to ease the pain. For those needing stronger relief, Fisherman’s Friend delivers powerful menthol in a small package that works quickly to temporarily numb the throat and clear congestion.

Throat Spray

When you need targeted relief that works fast, throat sprays deliver medication directly to the painful areas of your throat with just a quick spray. Difflam throat spray contains an anti-inflammatory ingredient that reduces swelling and soothes pain right where you need it most. Many patients find that a throat spray offers longer-lasting relief, especially for severe throat pain that makes swallowing difficult.

Syrups and Cough Medicines

Liquid medicines can effectively relieve sore throats accompanied by coughing or congestion. Buttercup syrup soothes irritated throats with its gentle formula, helping to calm persistent coughs that often make throat pain worse. When symptoms are affecting your sleep or daily activities, Day and Night Nurse offers targeted relief around the clock. The daytime formula is non-drowsy and helps fight symptoms, while the nighttime version helps you rest comfortably, allowing your body to heal as you sleep.

Home Remedies to Soothe Sore Throat Symptoms

Alongside non-prescription treatments, there are several sore throat remedies you can try at home:

Salt Water Gargle

Mix half a teaspoon of salt with warm water and gargle for 30 seconds. This draws out fluid from inflamed tissues and helps kill bacteria.

Honey and Lemon Hot Water

A tablespoon of honey mixed with fresh lemon juice in warm water creates a soothing drink that coats the throat. The honey has natural antibacterial properties, while the lemon provides vitamin C.

Keep Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water keeps your throat moist and helps thin mucus. You should also avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can cause dehydration.

Steam Inhalation

If you’ve got a sore throat, breathing in steam from a bowl of hot water (possibly with a drop of eucalyptus oil) can moisturise a dry, irritated throat and help loosen congestion.

Sore Throat Relief FAQs

A sore throat typically causes pain, scratchiness, or irritation that worsens when you swallow. You might also notice redness at the back of your mouth, swollen tonsils or hoarseness. Depending on the cause, you may experience additional symptoms like high fever, cough, runny nose, headache, or swollen glands in your neck. Some people also report a white coating on the tonsils or throat if the cause is bacterial.

Most sore throats resolve within 5-7 days by managing discomfort while your body fights off the underlying cause. Staying hydrated with warm teas or cool water and avoiding irritants like smoking can speed recovery. For persistent or severe sore throats with fever lasting more than 48 hours, speak to your GP to rule out strep throat or other conditions that need prescription treatment.

Not all sore throats require antibiotics. Most are caused by viruses, which don’t respond to antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections like strep throat, and using antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to antibiotic resistance, so it’s important to only use them when truly needed.
