Naproxen is a common medication for pain in the UK. It is used to treat swelling and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, muscle aches, period pain, gout, back pain, and inflamed tendons or joints. It helps reduce swelling and ease discomfort, making it a popular choice for both short-term and long-term pain relief.
Naproxen tabs relieve pain and reduce inflammation by blocking the production of prostaglandins, the chemicals in your body that cause these symptoms. Prostaglandins are produced by enzymes called COX-1 and COX-2, which trigger pain and swelling when you’re injured or have a condition like arthritis. By inhibiting these enzymes, Naproxen effectively reduces discomfort and inflammation, making it an excellent treatment for issues like muscle pain, joint problems, and period cramps.
You should take the minimum effective amount that relieves your pain and build up to the maximum Naproxen dosage if necessary. If you are prescribed Naproxen, your pharmacist or GP will advise you on the maximum dose based on your specific condition and overall health.
For adults, the general guidelines are:
To avoid potential side effects or complications, follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider and do not exceed the recommended maximum dose.
If you have any doubts about your dosage or if you have underlying health conditions, consult your pharmacist or GP for personalised advice.
Naproxen is suitable for adults over the age of 18 who require pain relief. Elderly patients or those with liver or kidney problems may require lower doses.
Do not use Naproxen if:
Before starting Naproxen, consult your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart problems, a history of strokes, asthma, blood clotting issues, or other relevant medical conditions.
Always take Naproxen exactly as directed by your pharmacist or doctor. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, preferably with or after food.
While Naproxen is effective for many, some may experience side effects. Common naproxen side effects may include indigestion, heartburn, nausea, headache, dizziness, and drowsiness.
If you experience any of these serious side effects, stop taking Naproxen immediately and call NHS 111 or go to A&E.
If you experience any side effects, tell your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed here. You may report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting side effects can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.
If you cannot tolerate Naproxen, there are other pain relief medications available. At Click2Pharmacy, we also stock Ibuprofen Gel, Volterol Emugel, and Paracetamol, which can be purchased online after you complete an online consultation.

“Naproxen Tablets are a great option for relieving everyday pains like menstrual cramps and backaches. They quickly ease inflammation and discomfort, giving you long-lasting relief. No matter if you’re dealing with cramps or a sore back, naproxen is a dependable option to help you feel better fast.”
Avoid taking Naproxen with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin or Ibuprofen. However, under a doctor’s or pharmacist’s guidance, you may be able to take Naproxen with Paracetamol.
Naproxen should not be used in the last 3 months of pregnancy. Consult your doctor if you are in the first 6 months of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
It’s best to avoid alcohol while taking Naproxen, as it may increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues.
Naproxen typically starts working within 30 minutes to an hour, but full relief may take a few days, depending on the condition being treated.
The dose of Naproxen available from Click2Pharmacy requires a prescription. You may be able to get Naproxen over the counter for specific conditions, but this will be a much lower dose. The higher dose we offer must be prescribed by a GP or pharmacist to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your needs.
