What is Ovestin Cream?

Ovestin Cream is a topical medication containing the active ingredient estriol, a type of oestrogen. It is primarily used to treat symptoms of vaginal atrophy, such as dryness, itching, and discomfort, which often occur during or after menopause. The cream helps restore the natural balance of oestrogen in the vaginal tissues, providing relief from these uncomfortable symptoms.

What is Ovestin Cream used for?

Ovestin Cream is mainly used to treat vaginal dryness, a common symptom of menopause. Vaginal dryness can cause discomfort, itching, and pain during intercourse. By replenishing oestrogen levels in the vaginal tissues, Ovestin Cream helps alleviate these symptoms and improves overall vaginal health.

In addition to treating vaginal dryness, Ovestin Cream may also be used to treat other conditions such as:

  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Vaginal itching and irritation
  • Urinary symptoms related to menopause

How does Ovestin Cream work?

Ovestin Cream contains estriol, a natural form of oestrogen. When applied to the vaginal area, estriol is absorbed into the local tissues. This absorption helps replenish the oestrogen levels that decrease during menopause. By restoring these levels, Ovestin Cream helps maintain the health and elasticity of the vaginal tissues, reducing dryness, itching, and discomfort. The cream also promotes the natural lubrication of the vagina, making sexual intercourse more comfortable.

Who is Ovestin Cream suitable for?

Ovestin Cream is suitable for women experiencing symptoms of vaginal atrophy due to menopause. It is particularly beneficial for those suffering from vaginal dryness, itching, and discomfort. Women who have undergone surgical menopause or those who have had their ovaries removed may also find relief with Ovestin Cream.

However, Ovestin Cream may not be suitable for everyone. You should not use Ovestin Cream if you:

  • Are allergic to estriol or any other ingredients in the cream
  • Have a history of breast cancer or other oestrogen-dependent tumours
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have a history of blood clots or thrombosis
  • Have liver disease
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

How to apply Ovestin Cream

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the cream.
  2. Remove the cap from the tube and screw the applicator onto the tube.
  3. Squeeze the tube to fill the applicator with the prescribed amount of cream.
  4. Unscrew the applicator from the tube and replace the cap on the tube.
  5. Lie down or stand with one leg raised on a chair.
  6. Gently insert the applicator into the vagina as far as it comfortably goes.
  7. Slowly press the plunger to release the cream into the vagina.
  8. Remove the applicator and wash it with warm, soapy water.
  9. Wash your hands again after applying the cream.

Apply Ovestin Cream once daily, preferably at bedtime, for the first few weeks of treatment. After initial improvement, your doctor may recommend reducing the frequency to two or three times a week.

The duration of treatment with Ovestin Cream varies depending on individual needs. Your doctor will advise you on how long to continue using the cream to manage your symptoms effectively.
