What is Colpermin?

Colpermin is a medication designed to relieve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It contains peppermint oil as its active ingredient, which helps to relax the muscles in the bowel wall. This relaxation can reduce the pain and discomfort associated with IBS. Colpermin comes in the form of enteric-coated capsules, which ensures the peppermint oil is released in the intestines rather than the stomach, providing targeted relief.

What is Colpermin used for?

Colpermin is primarily used to treat the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). These symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort. The medication helps to relax the muscles in the bowel, which can alleviate these symptoms. In addition to IBS, doctors may sometimes recommend Colpermin for other conditions that involve muscle spasms in the digestive tract, although this is less common.

How does Colpermin work?

Colpermin works by utilising the properties of peppermint oil, its active ingredient. Peppermint oil contains menthol, which has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. When you take Colpermin, the enteric-coated capsule ensures the peppermint oil reaches the intestines without being broken down by stomach acid. Once in the intestines, the peppermint oil helps to relax the muscles in the bowel wall, reducing spasms and easing pain and discomfort associated with IBS.

Who is Colpermin suitable for?

Colpermin is suitable for adults and children over the age of 15 who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). However, certain people should avoid taking Colpermin. These include individuals who are allergic to peppermint oil or any other ingredients in the capsule. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking Colpermin. Additionally, people with liver disease, gallstones, or severe heartburn should avoid this medication. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns about whether Colpermin is suitable for you.

How to take Colpermin

  • Take one capsule three times a day.
  • Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.
  • Do not chew or crush the capsule.
  • Take the capsule 30 to 60 minutes before meals.

Take Colpermin three times a day, ideally before meals. If your symptoms are severe, your doctor may advise you to take up to two capsules three times a day.

Continue taking Colpermin until your symptoms improve. If your symptoms persist after two weeks, consult your doctor for further advice.
