What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a weight loss medication delivered through a simple, once-weekly injection. Licensed in the UK since 2023, Wegovy contains semaglutide – a powerful ingredient that works naturally with your body to control appetite and reduce food intake. It imitates a hormone your body already produces, helping you feel fuller for longer and making it easier to eat less.

This prescription-only treatment must be provided by a licensed pharmacist, GP or online doctor. While it shares the same active ingredient as Ozempic, Wegovy is specifically developed and licensed for weight management.

How does Wegovy work?

Wegovy’s active ingredient, semaglutide, mimics a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1).

When you take Wegovy, it:

  • Controls appetite signals in the brain
  • Increases feelings of fullness after meals
  • Extends the duration of fullness
  • Helps regulate blood sugar levels

By mimicking your body’s natural fullness signals, it helps you eat less without feeling hungry or deprived. When you consume fewer calories, weight loss follows naturally.

Who can take Wegovy for weight loss?

Wegovy can be prescribed to those over the age of 18 who either:

  • Have a BMI over 30.
  • Have a BMI over 27 and suffer from weight-related health conditions, such as:
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Type 2 diabetes

If you have any of the following conditions, speak to your GP or pharmacist before using Wegovy:

  • If you take antimalarials, other diabetes drugs, blood pressure medications, antibiotics like clarithromycin or amoxicillin, androgens, skeletal muscle relaxants, HIV medications or antiepileptic drugs.
  • If you have a family history of thyroid tumours
  • You have a history of pancreatitis
  • You have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the ingredients in Wegovy. These include swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, fainting or feeling dizzy, problems breathing or swallowing, very rapid heartbeat or severe rash or itching.

It’s not fully known how Wegovy might affect an unborn baby or breast milk, so it’s not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding as a precautionary measure. If you’re planning to become pregnant, currently pregnant, or breastfeeding, please speak with your prescriber about alternative weight management options.

Wegovy Prescription Requirements

Wegovy prescription requirements will vary depending on whether you are a patient through the NHS or a private clinic:

Wegovy Private Prescription UK Requirements

To get Wegovy privately, you must have an assessment and prescription from a licensed UK pharmacist or GP, which will include weight management support and ongoing monitoring. Wegovy treatment is not available over-the-counter in the UK. Once you have been prescribed Wegovy, you can collect it from your local or online pharmacy.

Can I get Wegovy on the NHS?

NHS access to Wegovy is available through specialist weight management services under specific conditions. You may qualify if you have a BMI of 35 or higher or if your BMI falls between 30-34.9 and you meet the criteria for NHS services. Additionally, you must have one or more weight-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart disease, and have previously tried other weight management programmes without success.

Wegovy Dosage Options

Wegovy pens follow a gradual dose increase to help your body adjust. Your treatment begins with a 0.25mg weekly injection for the first month. After this initial period, your dose will increase to 0.5mg weekly for another month. Following this pattern, the dose progresses to 1mg, then 1.7mg, and finally reaches the maintenance dose of 2.4mg weekly.

You’ll stay at that level each time your dose increases for at least 4 weeks. This careful progression helps minimise side effects, and your healthcare provider will increase each dose based on your response to the medication.

How effective is Wegovy as a weight loss treatment?

Clinical trials have shown impressive results for Wegovy. In the largest study, people taking Wegovy alongside lifestyle changes lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, while those taking a placebo lost just 2.4%. To put this in perspective, someone weighing 95kg could potentially lose around 14kg with Wegovy.

The benefits go beyond weight loss. Research showed that people taking Wegovy had a 20% lower risk of serious heart problems, including heart attack and stroke, compared to those on placebo. Many participants also experienced reduced waist size and improved blood pressure.

These studies, funded by Novo Nordisk (the maker of Wegovy), showed the best results when the medication was combined with healthy eating and increased physical activity.

How much weight can you lose in a month with Wegovy?

While there haven’t been specific studies measuring month-by-month weight loss with Wegovy, we can share some Wegovy reviews from real users at Click2Pharmacy. Our patients have reported encouraging results, with some users sharing weight loss of between 7-14 pounds (3-6kg) in their first month of treatment, along with noticeable changes in their appetite and energy levels.

Here’s what some of our patients say:

“Kills your appetite, which is amazing as I’m not craving food 24/7. Lost a stone in 1 month. So much more energy to do things now. I stayed on 0.25 dose for the second month but may request 0.50 mg next month.”

“Starting to see results after one month. 7lb down, very happy with the service and the product.”

“Has helped me lose weight. About 8lb in 4 weeks.”

Remember that weight loss results can vary significantly between users. Your personal weight loss journey may be different, and you should focus on steady, consistent progress rather than rapid results.

How to Use Wegovy Pens

Where should I inject Wegovy?

Wegovy can be injected into fleshy areas of your body, including your stomach, thighs, and upper arms. While you can use the same general area or limb for each injection, you should rotate the specific spot to at least one finger width away or choose different body parts for each dose.

You should not inject Wegovy pens into:

  • Tender, bruised, red, warm or hard skin
  • Areas with scars or stretch marks

How to Inject Wegovy

You’ll need your Wegovy pen, cotton wool or gauze, an alcohol swab (or soap and water), and a sharps disposal container. Always inject on a clean, flat surface:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
  2. Choose where you’re going to inject (stomach, thigh, or upper arm)
  3. Clean the area with an alcohol swab or soap and water
  4. Let the area dry completely
  5. Remove the pen cap
  6. Place the pen firmly against your skin at a 90-degree angle
  7. Press and hold the button until you hear a click
  8. Count slowly to 6 while holding the pen in place
  9. Remove the pen and check the yellow indicator has filled the window
  10. Gently press a cotton wool pad on the site if needed (don’t rub)
  11. Dispose of the used pen in your sharps container

Remember to note down the date and where you injected it for your records to help with rotation.

Wegovy Side Effects

As with many medications, Wegovy weight loss injections are not suitable for some groups of people and can have potential side effects. Not everyone will experience side effects while using Wegovy, but you should be aware of the possible reactions.

Common Side Effects of Wegovy

  • Headache
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Burping
  • Gas (Flatulence)
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling weak or tired.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) in patients with diabetes.

As your body gets used to the medication, these will go away over time.

Uncommon Side Effects of Wegovy

  • Fast heartbeat
  • Increase of pancreatic enzymes (such as lipase and amylase) shown in blood tests
  • A delay in the emptying of the stomach
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) in patients without diabetes
  • Increased levels of bilirubin in your blood. Signs include jaundice, which is the yellowing of the skin or the whites of your eyes.

Other side effects and possible interactions of this drug can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet.

Reporting Side Effects

If you experience any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed here. You can report any side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme, which can help provide more information on the safety of any medication.

Alternatives to Wegovy

At our online weight loss clinic, we offer different types of weight loss treatments to help you with your weight loss journey. Finding the right one for you will depend on your health history, lifestyle, and goals.

Wegovy vs Mounjaro

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is a newer weight loss injection that works in a similar way to Wegovy to control appetite and blood sugar. Recent clinical trials suggest it might even help you lose more weight than Wegovy, making it another strong option for chronic weight management.

Wegovy vs Saxenda

Like Wegovy, Saxenda is an injectable weight loss drug that helps suppress appetite. The main difference is that you need to take Saxenda every day, while Wegovy is just once a week. Some people find Wegovy’s weekly dose schedule more convenient for their lifestyle.

Wegovy vs Ozempic

Ozempic actually contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy (semaglutide), but it isn’t licensed as a weight loss treatment in the UK, and it can only be prescribed for treating type 2 diabetes. While the medications are very similar, they have different doses and uses.

Important Information

  • Keep Wegovy pens and needles out of reach of children.
  • Before use, store your pen in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C. Once you start using your Wegovy pen, you can keep it in the fridge or store it at room temperature.
  • Keep the pen cap on to protect it from the light.
  • Wegovy semaglutide injections are not suitable for freezing.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.
  • If you think the solution is not clear and colourless, do not use it.
  • You can’t throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. In your first order with Click2Pharmacy, you will be provided with a sharps bin to dispose of your pens.

Wegovy Prescription Weight Loss Medication

A View From Our Expert

As a pharmacist who’s helped many patients on their weight loss journey, I’ve seen firsthand how effective Wegovy can be. It works with your body’s own systems to help control appetite and slow down digestion, making it easier to eat less without feeling deprived. What really impresses me is how well it works alongside lifestyle changes – when our patients combine Wegovy with healthy eating and regular exercise, they often see significant, lasting results.

Wegovy Weight Loss Injections FAQs

Getting started with Wegovy is easy through Click2Pharmacy’s online weight loss clinic. Our licensed prescribers will assess your suitability through a simple online consultation and provide a prescription if Wegovy is right for you. We’ll then deliver your medication directly to your door and check in with you throughout your treatment.

The stomach (abdomen) is generally considered the most effective injection site for Wegovy. However, the thighs and upper arms are also good options. The key is to rotate where you inject it into your body to prevent skin problems while still choosing areas with enough fatty tissue for proper absorption.

While Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, they’re not exactly the same. The main differences are their licensed uses and dosing – Wegovy is specifically approved for weight loss and reaches a higher maximum dose, while Ozempic is licensed for diabetes management in the UK. Although they contain the same active ingredient, they’re packaged and prescribed differently.

Wegovy is a prescription-only medication that requires proper medical oversight to ensure safe and effective use. Before starting treatment, a qualified healthcare professional needs to assess your medical history, current health status, and suitability. This requirement helps protect patient safety and ensures that Wegovy is only being used by those who can benefit from it safely. That’s why all legitimate pharmacies, including us at Click2Pharmacy, require a proper consultation and prescription before dispensing Wegovy.

After completing a health assessment, you can get a Wegovy prescription through a licensed UK pharmacy or GP. At Click2Pharmacy, we make this process straightforward – start with an online consultation, and if Wegovy is suitable for you, our licensed prescribers can provide your prescription, and you can begin your weight loss treatment right away.

Once you have a prescription for Wegovy, you can have it filled at any registered UK pharmacy that stocks the medication, whether that’s a local pharmacy or an online service. At Click2Pharmacy, we make the process simple by handling both your prescription and medication supply in one place and delivering straight to your door.

Wegovy treatment starts at a low dose of 0.25mg weekly and gradually increases over 16 weeks until you reach the full maintenance dose of 2.4mg. This step-by-step increase happens every four weeks, allowing your body to adjust to the medication comfortably. Once you reach the 2.4mg maintenance dose, you’ll continue with weekly injections until you achieve your target weight or your pharmacist or GP recommends any changes.

Yes, Wegovy is fully licensed for weight management in the UK. Since September 2023, it has been available both through an NHS specialist weight management treatment plan and privately through registered healthcare providers like Click2Pharmacy. The UK government is also running a two-year pilot programme, announced in June 2023, to explore making Wegovy more widely accessible beyond specialist services.

While Wegovy and Mounjaro are weight loss medications, they work slightly differently. Wegovy contains semaglutide, which mimics one natural hormone in your body, while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which mimics two hormones.

While there’s no specific interaction between Wegovy and alcohol, it’s best to drink in moderation during your treatment. Alcohol can increase your risk of low blood sugar, especially when you first start Wegovy. It might also trigger or worsen side effects like nausea. If you do choose to drink, stay within recommended guidelines and be mindful of how your body responds.

Yes, you can switch from Saxenda to Wegovy. Since they’re different medications, you’ll need a new prescription and assessment. If you’re currently using Saxenda, our prescribers at Click2Pharmacy can evaluate whether switching to Wegovy might be beneficial for you. The main advantage of switching is that Wegovy requires just one injection per week, compared to daily for Saxenda.

Beyond weight loss, Wegovy may help improve several weight-related health conditions. Clinical studies have shown it can help reduce blood pressure, improve blood sugar levels, and lower cholesterol in many patients. However, Wegovy is specifically licensed for weight management, and any additional health benefits should be discussed with a GP or pharmacist.

Each Wegovy pen contains one monthly dose, which is four weekly injections. Your pen is pre-filled with your prescribed strength of medication, and you’ll use it once a week before starting a new pen.

If you find there is extra medication in your pen, this is normal, as it is there to help prime your pen and ensure you’re getting the correct dose. Don’t try to use any remaining medication after your four weekly doses.

When you stop taking Wegovy, you may notice changes in your appetite and eating patterns, which could lead to weight regain. If you’re considering stopping treatment, you need to contact and work with your prescriber, as they can help you develop a plan to maintain your weight loss through diet and exercise or discuss other options if needed.

If you miss your weekly Wegovy dose, take it as soon as possible, within 5 days of your missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip that dose and take your next scheduled dose at the usual time. Don’t take a double dose to make up for the missed one. If you’re unsure, contact your prescriber for guidance.
