What are Saxenda weight loss injections?

Saxenda injections are prescription weight loss pens containing liraglutide, a clinically proven medication for weight management. Each Saxenda injectable pen is pre-filled and designed for easy daily self-injection at home. When you buy Saxenda online from our UK pharmacy, you’ll receive everything needed, including disposable needles, alcohol wipes and a sharps disposal bin.

How does Saxenda work?

Saxenda is designed to suppress your appetite and help you feel satisfied with smaller portions, which in turn helps you lose weight. It contains the active ingredient liraglutide, which mimics the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that your body naturally produces.

Liraglutide works by:

  • Slowing down how quickly food leaves your stomach, so it makes you feel fuller for longer
  • Reducing your appetite and food cravings
  • Helping regulate blood sugar levels
  • Signalling to your brain that you’re satisfied after eating

Who can take Saxenda for weight loss?

You may be suitable for Saxenda if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or above (classified as obese), OR
  • Your BMI is between 27-30, AND you have at least one weight-related health condition such as:
    • Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • High cholesterol levels
    • Obstructive sleep apnea

DO NOT use Saxenda if you:

  • Are allergic to liraglutide or any other ingredients in Saxenda
  • Are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
  • Are under 18 or over 75 years old
  • Have severe heart problems or heart failure
  • Have serious digestive problems (gastroparesis or inflammatory bowel disease)
  • Have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer
  • Have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2

Saxenda Dosage

Saxenda treatment uses a gradual dose increase over 5 weeks to minimise side effects:

Week Dose injected
Week 1 0.6 mg once a day
Week 2 1.2 mg once a day
Week 3 1.8 mg once a day
Week 4 2.4 mg once a day
Week 5 onwards 3.0 mg once a day

Begin with 0.6mg daily and increase the dose weekly until you reach the maintenance dose of 3.0mg by week 5. Treatment should be stopped if you haven’t lost at least 5% of your body weight after 12 weeks on the highest dose.

How effective is Saxenda weight loss medication?

Clinical trials show that Saxenda is a highly effective weight loss drug when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. In a 56-week study of 3,731 patients, 63% of people taking Saxenda lost 5% or more of their body weight compared to 34% taking a placebo, and 33% lost more than 10% of their body weight compared to 15% taking a placebo.

As supported by Saxenda reviews from real users, this is one of the most effective prescription weight loss treatments available in the UK.

How to Use Saxenda Weight Loss Injections

Where to Inject Saxenda

You can inject Saxenda into your upper arm, abdomen (stomach area), or upper thigh. Rotate between different injection sites to avoid irritation.

When to Inject Saxenda

Take your Saxenda injection once daily at any time. You can inject it with or without food, but try to inject at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in your body.

How to Inject Saxenda

  1. Remove the pen cap and attach a new needle securely
  2. Prime the pen by pressing the dose button until you see a drop of medication
  3. Select your prescribed dose by turning the dose selector
  4. Clean your chosen injection site with an alcohol wipe
  5. Insert the needle under your skin at a 90-degree angle
  6. Press and hold the dose button firmly until it clicks
  7. Keep the needle in place and count to 6 slowly
  8. Remove the needle and dispose of it safely in your sharps bin
  9. Replace the pen cap and store according to instructions

How long does each pen last?

Lasts Dose Range
Pen 1 17 days 0.6mg daily dose
Pen 2 8.5 days 1.2mg daily dose
Pen 3 6.5 days 1.8mg daily dose
Pen 4 + 6 days 3.0mg daily dose

The duration of each Saxenda pen depends on your current dose. During the first week of treatment at 0.6mg daily, your initial pen will last over two weeks. As you gradually increase your dose each week, the pens will be used up more quickly. By the time you reach the full 3.0mg maintenance dose, you’ll use approximately one pen every six days, requiring about five pens per month.

Side Effects of Saxenda

Most people tolerate Saxenda well, but some side effects can occur, especially when starting treatment. The gradual dose increase helps minimise these effects.

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea and vomiting (usually improves after a few weeks)
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Headache
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • Indigestion and stomach discomfort

Uncommon Side Effects

  • Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, bruising, redness)
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Dizziness
  • Changes in taste
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Increased heart rate
  • Gallbladder problems

Rare Side Effects

  • Severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, swelling of face or throat)
  • Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain)
  • Kidney problems
  • Thyroid problems

Always review the patient information leaflet before starting treatment.

Contact your GP or pharmacist immediately if you experience any severe or persistent side effects. Most side effects are mild and improve as your body adjusts to the medication.

Reporting Side Effects

If you experience any side effects, even if they aren’t included in the patient information leaflet, report them to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme.

Saxenda Alternative Weight Loss Treatments

If Saxenda isn’t suitable for you, other weight loss treatments are available from our weight loss clinic:

Saxenda vs Wegovy (Semaglutide)

Wegovy works similarly to Saxenda by suppressing appetite. While Saxenda requires daily injection, Wegovy only needs to be taken once per week. Both medications are GLP-1 receptor agonists, but Wegovy may offer slightly greater weight loss results in clinical studies.

Saxenda vs Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Mounjaro is the newest weight loss medication, and it is taken weekly like Wegovy. It works on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, potentially offering enhanced weight loss compared to Saxenda.

Saxenda vs Orlistat

Orlistat is an oral medication that works differently from Saxenda by blocking fat absorption in your digestive system. While Saxenda suppresses appetite, Orlistat requires strict dietary changes to avoid unpleasant side effects. Saxenda typically produces greater weight loss than Orlistat.

Important Information

  • Saxenda is a prescription-only medicine (POM)
