What are warts & verrucas?

Warts and verrucas are very common skin growths. While they aren’t dangerous, they can be uncomfortable, sometimes painful, and often something people want to remove because of how they look or feel.

Warts are small, rough lumps that can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the hands and fingers.

Verrucas are a type of wart that grows on the soles of the feet. Because of the pressure from standing and walking, verrucas are often flat and can form a callus (hard skin) over the top, which can be painful.

What causes warts & verruccas?

Warts and verrucas are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which infects the outer layer of skin. The virus can enter through tiny cuts or breaks in the skin, making certain areas more vulnerable.

Because HPV thrives in warm and damp environments, it’s easy to catch the infection in places like swimming pools, gyms, or communal showers. Walking barefoot in these areas increases the risk of verrucas. Sharing personal items like towels, socks, or shoes can also spread the virus.

Not everyone who comes into contact with HPV will develop warts or verrucas, but children, teenagers, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to be affected.

Symptoms of Warts & Verrucas

The way warts and verrucas look and feel can vary depending on the type. Recognising the common signs can help you identify them and choose the best method for wart removal.

Common Warts

These usually appear on the hands, fingers, or knees. They are firm, raised, and have a rough surface that may resemble a small cauliflower.

Verrucas (Plantar Warts)

Found on the soles of the feet, verrucas are often flat due to pressure from standing or walking. They may have a black dot in the centre and can be painful when walking, particularly on the heel or ball of the foot.

Flat Warts (Plane Warts)

Smaller and smoother than common warts, these often appear in clusters on the face, hands, or shins. They are usually flesh-coloured and slightly raised.

Filiform Warts

These long, thin growths often develop around the mouth, nose, or eyes. Their appearance makes them more noticeable, even if they aren’t painful.

Periungual Warts

These form around fingernails or toenails. They can be rough and irregular, sometimes causing discomfort or affecting nail growth.

Warts & Verrucas Treatment

While warts and verrucas can go away on their own, treatment helps clear them faster, reduces discomfort, and lowers the risk of spreading. At Click2Pharmacy’s online clinic, you can order effective over-the-counter treatments with quick home delivery.

Our range includes:

  • Salicylic acid gels and solutions – gradually soften and break down the layers of the wart and verruca. Do not use salicylic acid on the face.
  • Cryotherapy sprays – freezing treatments are a quick, noninvasive alternative for stubborn warts. These sprays work with a precision applicator for more clinically proven and rapid results. Do not use cryotherapy sprays around nail cuticles, as this can cause permanent nail damage.

Warts & Verrucas FAQs

Warts and verrucas are both caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can spread easily through direct skin contact or by touching shared surfaces like floors, shoes, or towels.

Verrucas are especially likely to spread in warm, damp places like swimming pools and communal showers. The virus can also transfer to different parts of your body if you touch or scratch a wart and then another area of skin.

Covering warts and verrucas with plasters or socks when in shared spaces can help reduce the risk of passing them on.

Although they may look similar at first glance, skin tags and warts are very different. Warts are caused by HPV and usually have a rough, uneven surface. They can spread to others and to different areas of your body.

Skin tags are harmless growths of soft skin that often develop in skin folds around the neck, armpits, or groin. They are not caused by a virus, are not infectious, and do not spread. Skin tags don’t usually need treatment unless they are bothersome or for cosmetic reasons.

Salicylic acid gels, solutions, and medicated pads are designed only for common warts and verrucas. A different strain of HPV causes genital warts and needs specific prescription treatments that are safe for use on sensitive skin. Using salicylic acid in these areas can cause significant irritation or damage. If you think you may have genital warts, visit our genital warts online clinic for the right treatment.

Warts and verrucas can return even after successful treatment. This is because the HPV virus can remain in the skin for a time. Consistently using verruca and wart treatments and following hygiene measures, like covering the wart and avoiding shared surfaces barefoot, helps reduce the risk of recurrence.

You should never try to dig out a verruca, as this can damage the normal skin around it, cause pain, and increase the risk of spreading the infection. Instead, licensed treatments work by gradually breaking down the layers of the wart.

Many salicylic acid products advise soaking the affected area first and gently applying a drop of the liquid or gel. After 24 hours, peel or pick off the gel and use a pumice stone or emery board to remove any loose, dead skin from the treated area. This process may need to be repeated regularly until the verruca is fully cleared. Always follow the instructions in the product’s information leaflet, and if you are unsure, consult a pharmacist or doctor for guidance.

You should get advice if a wart or verruca is painful, keeps coming back, spreads quickly, or doesn’t improve after several weeks of treatment. You should also speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure if a growth is a wart, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation, as these conditions require extra care for foot problems.
