How to Travel with Mounjaro & Wegovy Weight Loss Injections

If you’ve been working hard to lose weight with Mounjaro or Wegovy, going on holiday doesn’t mean everything has to go out the window. You can still enjoy yourself and take a break – you just need to plan ahead.

Travelling with injections can feel daunting, especially if it’s your first time. But with the right prep, it’s one less thing to worry about while you’re away.

Can I take Mounjaro abroad?

In most cases,  you can take Mounjaro pens abroad. If you’re travelling within the EU, you’re unlikely to run into any problems.

But some countries have much stricter rules around medication. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Indonesia, and Turkey may require you to apply for an import permit before you travel.

In places like China and Russia, Mounjaro could be classed as a controlled substance, which means bringing it in without the proper documents could land you in trouble.

If you’re travelling outside the EU, always check the local laws before you go. Look on the country’s official government or embassy website, or ask your airline for advice if you’re unsure.

How to Take Weight Loss Injections Through Airport Security

Airport security can feel like a hassle at the best of times, but taking Mounjaro or Wegovy through isn’t usually a problem if you’re prepared.

Keep it in Your Hand Luggage

Always carry your Mounjaro injection pen in your hand luggage. Not only does this make it easier to explain if needed, but it also protects it from temperature changes in the hold.

Checked luggage isn’t temperature-controlled, and the loading and unloading process could damage your medical device.

Take Your Prescription or a Doctor’s Note

Security staff might not recognise the medication, so having your prescription or a note from your GP or pharmacist helps avoid questions. You can also keep Mounjaro in its original packaging with the prescription label attached and the patient information leaflet – this makes it clear it’s for personal medical use.

Use a Cool Bag or Mounjaro Travel Case

Mounjaro and Wegovy need to be kept cool – ideally between 2°C to 8°C. A small medical cool bag or a purpose-made travel case with an ice pack will help keep your pen at the right temperature while you travel.

Don’t freeze the pen, and avoid letting it get too warm while waiting around in the airport.

Pack Needles and Alcohol Wipes

If your pen needs a new needle for every dose, pack a few spares with some alcohol wipes in your hand luggage too. Keep them in their original packaging and store them with your prescription to avoid any issues.

Can you take Mounjaro on a plane?

You’re allowed to fly with Mounjaro and Wegovy in your hand luggage, along with needles and a cooling case or ice pack.

Airlines and airport security teams are used to passengers travelling with essential medication. As long as you follow the rules – carry your prescription, keep the pen in its original packaging, and let staff know if asked – you shouldn’t run into any problems.

If you’re using a cooling case, check whether it uses gel or ice packs, and make sure they’re allowed through security. Most are fine if they’re fully frozen and being used to keep medicine cold, but it’s worth checking with your airline or the airport.

Taking Wegovy or Mounjaro on Holiday

If you’re only going away for a week or less, the simplest option is to time your Mounjaro dose just before you leave. That way, you don’t need to travel with it at all. For longer trips, you’ll need to bring your weight loss treatment with you.

It’s also worth setting a reminder on your phone, especially if you’ll be in a different time zone or out of your routine. If you usually take it at the same time each week, work out what that looks like in the local time where you’re going.

Avoid taking it right before a long flight or a day when you’re not near a toilet, just in case you feel sick or tired afterwards.

How to Dispose of Needles Abroad

Used needles should never be thrown in the bin or flushed away. If you’re staying at a hotel, ask reception or housekeeping if they have a medical waste bin or sharps disposal service.

If that’s not an option, travel with a small portable sharps container. These are available online or from some pharmacies and are designed to hold used needles safely until you’re back home.

Always keep used needles sealed and out of reach of others, especially children or cleaning staff.

Mounjaro Storage Temperature: How to Store Mounjaro While You’re on Holiday

You need to store Mounjaro in a fridge between 2°C and 8°C. When you’re travelling, that usually means using a travel cooler or a travel case with a cold pack to keep it within that range.

Once it’s been taken out of the fridge, you can keep your medication at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 21 days. So, if you’re staying somewhere without a fridge, you may still be able to keep it safely,  but avoid leaving it in direct sunlight, hot cars, or anywhere that gets too warm.

If your accommodation has a fridge, check the temperature setting as some mini-fridges can be too cold and may accidentally freeze the pen. Refrigerate it in the main compartment, never the freezer section.

Can you skip a week of Mounjaro while you’re on holiday?

It’s not ideal, but missing one dose won’t undo all your progress. If you skip a weekly injection, just take your next one as soon as you remember, as long as it’s within four days of your usual dose. If it’s been longer than that, skip the missed dose and wait for your next scheduled one.

That said, missing doses too often can slow down your results, so it’s best to stick to your routine where you can. If you’re worried about managing your injection while you’re away, speak to your GP or pharmacist before you travel.

Travelling with Mounjaro: Managing Your Eating & Drinking

Holidays usually mean bigger meals, more snacks, and a few drinks – and that’s fine. But if you’re on Weovy or Mounjaro medication, it helps to keep a few things in mind.

You might find your appetite is still lower than usual, even when surrounded by all-you-can-eat buffets and beach bars. Try not to force yourself to eat more than you’re comfortable with – especially if you’re just eating because it’s “holiday food.”

Certain foods may also trigger nausea or make side effects worse, so it’s worth being mindful of what you’re eating, especially if you’re trying new dishes. Some people find high-fat or heavily processed meals harder to tolerate, while others do better with simple, protein-rich foods.

Alcohol can affect people differently while on weight loss injections. You might feel the effects faster or feel more nauseous if you drink on an empty stomach. Pace yourself and listen to your body.

Most importantly, stay hydrated. Dehydration can make the side effects of tirzepatide worse, especially if you’re in a hot climate.

Travelling with Mounjaro: Managing Your Exercise

It’s easy to fall out of your usual routine while you’re away – and that’s not a bad thing. A break can be good for your mental health, and taking time to relax won’t undo your weight loss journey.

That said, staying active can help you feel better while you’re away, especially if you’re dealing with side effects like bloating or sluggishness. You don’t need to stick to a strict workout plan – walking, swimming, or even just exploring your surroundings on foot all count.

If you’re usually quite active, try to keep some movement in your day so it doesn’t feel like such a jump when you get home. But don’t put pressure on yourself – enjoying your holiday is part of the process too.
