Voltarol Emulgel is a gel used to relieve muscle, tendon and joint pain and swelling caused by:
Voltarol Emulgel is a topical gel containing diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It targets muscles and joints, reducing pain and inflammation at the source. By decreasing the chemicals responsible for swelling and discomfort, it provides effective relief directly where it’s needed.
Voltarol Emulgel is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and older. At Click2Pharmacy, we can only sell this product to adults over 18.
It’s not suitable if:
If you have a history of ulcers or are currently pregnant, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
You can apply Voltarol Emulgel three to four times a day, leaving at least four hours between applications. Do not use more than four times in any 24-hour period.
Avoid using Voltarol Emulgel for more than 2 weeks to treat muscle or joint injuries or tendonitis. If you’re using the gel for arthritis, your doctor may recommend regular reviews to monitor your treatment.
Like all medicines, Voltarol Emulgel can cause side effects:
If you experience breathing difficulties or an allergic reaction, stop using the gel and seek medical advice immediately.
For a full list of side effects, see the patient information leaflet.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects, even if they are not listed here. You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting side effects helps improve understanding of the medicine’s safety.

“Voltarol Emulgel is a great choice for easing joint and muscle pain. You can apply it right where it hurts, so it works fast to reduce pain and swelling. It’s simple to use and a good alternative if you’d rather not take tablets.”
Voltarol Emulgel is a prescription medication in the UK. You can buy it from our UK pharmacy by completing an online assessment as part of our Pain Relief Clinic.
Alternatively, you can buy Voltarol Emulgel 1%, which is available over-the-counter.
Voltarol Emulgel starts to relieve pain and inflammation within 1-2 hours of being applied to the skin, although, depending on the condition being treated, significant improvement may take a few days.
Unless directed by a doctor, you should not use Voltarol Emulgel with ibuprofen or other NSAIDs, as it could increase side effects. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor for advice if you’re unsure.
We don’t recommend using Naproxen and Voltarol Emulgel at the same time, as both are NSAIDs and could increase the risk of side effects. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using them together.
Tiger Balm and Voltarol Emulgel work differently. Tiger Balm uses natural ingredients for a warming or cooling effect that soothes minor aches, whereas Voltarol Emulgel contains diclofenac, a clinically proven NSAID that reduces inflammation and provides targeted pain relief. The best option for you will depend on how much pain you are in and the type of condition you have.
If you are breastfeeding, the active ingredient, diclofenac, can pass into breast milk in small amounts. For this reason, Voltarol Emulgel should only be used under medical supervision while breastfeeding. It should not be applied to the breasts, large areas of skin, or used for long periods.
