Weight Loss Pills
Losing weight can be very challenging for most people. Following a healthy diet and exercising may not be enough to get the weight off, and it can become very frustrating. There are weight loss treatments out there that can help with those stubborn pounds, one of which are weight loss pills. These are designed for adults aged 18 and over who have a BMI of 28 and over (click here for our BMI calculator).
What are Orlistat, Xenical and Alli?
Orlistat, Xenical and Alli are weight loss pills that contain the active ingredient Orlistat. Xenical and Alli are actually brand of names of Orlistat, which is the generic name. This means all three tablets work in exactly the same way. However, there are some notable differences between them.
Orlistat 120mg
As mentioned above, Orlistat 120mg is the generic version of Xenical and Alli, which are brand names. This means that Orlistat is cheaper to buy. Orlistat comes in a capsule form and the 120mg indicates the dosage. Orlistat is available to two types of people:
- Those who have a BMI of 30 or over
- Those who have a BMI of 28 and over, but also have a weight related medical condition such as diabetes.
Orlistat 120mg capsule is taken 3 times a day with each meal, and works by preventing a third of the fat in your food from being absorbed by your body. This means that you still need to follow a healthy balanced diet, as eating too much fat could mean the treatment will not work. You do not need to take a capsule if you miss a meal. Orlistat is normally taken for 12 weeks, and if it works successfully then you should lose around 5% body weight. However, if you have not lost this weight then speak to you doctor or pharmacist as treatment may need to be stopped. Orlistat 120mg is available on prescription only.
Orlistat can help you lose more than 10% of your body weight in 6 months. Some people find they gain the weight back after stopping the treatment, but eating healthily and exercising will help keep the weight off.
Xenical 120mg
Xenical 120mg is exactly the same as Orlistat, and works in the same way. As Xenical is the branded version, it is more expensive than Orlistat. The dosage is exactly the same too. If it is used properly alongside a calorie-controlled diet, then Xenical will stop enzymes from breaking down a third of the fat from the meal you have eaten. This fat is then passed into your stools. Like Orlistat, you should take it for 12 weeks, and should expect to lose 5% of your body weight. Again, it is only available on prescription.
Alli 60mg
Alli is the third weight loss pill available in the UK. Alli 60mg has half the dose of Orlistat 120mg and Xenical 120mg. Alli works in exactly the same way, expect that it prevents a quarter of the fat from being absorbed into your body. This is due to the lower dosage in comparison to Orlistat and Xenical. One advantage of this is that you can buy Alli over the counter, and it is also cheaper than Xenical.
Just Like Orlistat and Xenical, one tablet should be taken three times a day with every meal. Alli can help you lose 50% more weight than with dietary changes and exercise alone. This means for every 2 pounds you lose through a healthy lifestyle, Alli can help you lose 1 pound more.
Side Effects of Orlistat
Like any medicine, there are side effects of Orlistat, Xenical and Alli. The main side effects are:
- Flatulence
- An oily discharge
- Sudden or more frequent bowel movements
These side effects may indicate you are having too much fat in your meals, and you should try to reduce this. Other side effects people may experience are pain the stomach, diarrhoea and incontinence. These side effects can feel very unpleasant may get worse if you are eating too much. Although rare, there are some serious side effects such as:
