Chloramphenicol Eye Drops are a type of antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. They are commonly prescribed to manage conditions such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other bacterial infections affecting the eye.
Chloramphenicol Eye Drops are primarily used to improve eye health by treating bacterial infections. They are effective in managing conditions such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis. Additionally, they may be used to treat other bacterial infections of the eye as determined by a doctor or pharmacist.
Chloramphenicol Eye Drops work by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. The active ingredient, chloramphenicol, binds to the bacterial ribosome, preventing the formation of essential proteins needed for bacterial growth and replication. This action helps to eliminate the bacterial infection and reduce symptoms such as redness, swelling, and discharge.
Chloramphenicol Eye Drops are suitable for adults and children over the age of 2 years who have been diagnosed with a bacterial eye infection. However, they may not be suitable for individuals who have a known allergy to chloramphenicol or any other ingredients in the eye drops. Additionally, they should be used with caution in individuals with a history of blood disorders or bone marrow problems.
Chloramphenicol Eye Drops are typically used every 2 to 4 hours for the first 48 hours, then every 4 hours thereafter. The duration of treatment usually lasts for 5 to 7 days, but it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions.
Like all medications, Chloramphenicol Eye Drops can cause side effects. Below are some common, uncommon, and serious side effects.
