Uses for Fucidin H Cream

Fucidin H Cream treats various skin conditions involving bacterial infection and irritation. It’s particularly helpful for infected eczema and dermatitis when these conditions are complicated by bacteria. Additionally, Fucidin H Cream can be used to manage skin irritations, rashes, or inflammation caused by minor cuts, scrapes, or other skin damage where there might be a risk of infection.

How does Fucidin H Cream work?

Fucidin H Cream is an effective treatment that combines two active ingredients: fusidic acid and hydrocortisone. Fusidic acid is an antibiotic which targets and kills the bacteria causing the infection, preventing it from spreading or worsening on the affected skin. Meanwhile, hydrocortisone helps reduce inflammation, relieving symptoms like swelling and itchiness. This dual-action formula ensures thorough care for both infection and irritation on the affected skin.

Fucidin H Cream Max Dosage

The maximum recommended dosage for Fucidin H Cream is twice a day, in the morning and evening. This dosage is usually sufficient for most patients and should not be exceeded unless directed by your GP or pharmacist. The cream should be used for up to 2 weeks, and if there is no improvement in your condition after 7 days, you should talk to your doctor. It’s important to follow the prescribed dosage carefully to avoid potential side effects, particularly when using the cream on sensitive areas or in large quantities.

Who can use Fucidin H Cream?

Fucidin H Cream is suitable for adults with skin conditions involving infection and irritation. However, do not use it if you are sensitive to fusidic acid, hydrocortisone acetate, or any other ingredients in the cream. It is also not recommended for treating specific skin issues like acne rosacea, perioral dermatitis, or infections caused only by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

How to Apply Fucidin H Cream

Use Fucidin H Cream exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Apply the cream to the affected area once in the morning and once in the evening. Before applying, wash your hands, then gently rub a small amount of cream into the skin until it is fully absorbed. Be careful to avoid your eyes, and rewash your hands after applying.

Side Effects of Fucidin H Cream

Like all medicines, Fucidin H Cream may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Common side effects

  • Mild irritation
  • Itching or burning at the application site

Uncommon side effects

  • Worsening of your eczema or a rash
  • An allergic reaction (e.g. difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash)

Consult the patient information leaflet for a complete list of potential side effects.

Reporting Fucidin H Cream Side Effects

If you experience any side effects, tell your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed here. You may report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting side effects helps provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

Alternative Treatments to Fucidin H Cream

If Fucidin H Cream is not suitable for you, or if you’re looking for alternative treatments, other options are available.

For bacterial skin infections, your doctor may recommend a different antibiotic cream or ointment, such as Mupirocin.

If you’re dealing with inflammation without an infection, a mild corticosteroid cream like Hydrocortisone might be recommended.

For conditions like eczema or dermatitis, non-steroidal creams, such as emollients or moisturising creams, can also help manage symptoms.

Our Eczema and Dermatitis Treatment Clinic offers a wide range of treatments, including prescription and over-the-counter products.

Fucidin H Cream For Eczema and Dermatitis Relief

A View From Our Expert

“I recommend Fucidin H Cream because it effectively combats bacterial infections and reduces the inflammation and discomfort associated with conditions like eczema or dermatitis. As it is a dual-action treatment that only needs to be applied to the area twice a day, it is gentle on the skin by minimising the need for frequent applications.”

Fucidin H Cream FAQs

Fucidin H Cream is a steroid cream, so you should consult your pharmacist or doctor before using it if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. They will weigh the benefits against any potential risks to you and your baby.

Fucidin H Cream should only be used on the face if advised by your doctor. It should not be applied near the eyes. Prolonged use on the face is generally discouraged due to the risk of side effects.

Rinse your eyes thoroughly with cold water. If irritation persists or you experience vision problems, seek medical attention immediately.

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

No, Fucidin H Cream should not be used for cold sores. Cold sores are caused by a virus (herpes simplex virus), and Fucidin H Cream is an antibiotic that targets bacterial infections. Antiviral treatments are available from our Cold Sore Treatment Clinic.

Fucidin H Cream is not recommended for treating spots. Acne is typically caused by a combination of factors, including excess oil production and clogged pores, rather than a bacterial infection that Fucidin H Cream is designed to treat. Acne creams and gels are available from our Acne Medication and Treatment Clinic.

Fucidin H Cream is suitable to use on the genitals if prescribed by a pharmacist or doctor, but it should be applied with caution. The skin in this area is sensitive, and prolonged use or use on large areas should be avoided unless directed by a healthcare professional.

No, Fucidin H Cream should not be used for thrush or a yeast infection. Thrush and yeast infections are caused by fungi, and Fucidin H Cream contains an antibiotic and a mild steroid, which are effective against bacterial infections and inflammation but not fungal infections. Antifungal medications are recommended for treating thrush or yeast infections and are available from our Thrush Medication and Treatment Clinic.

Fucidin H Cream is not typically used to treat psoriasis. While corticosteroids like hydrocortisone can sometimes help with inflammation, Fucidin H Cream is more suitable for conditions involving bacterial infections. If your psoriasis becomes infected, your pharmacist or GP might prescribe an appropriate treatment, but generally, other medications such as Mometasone or Betnovate Lotion are recommended specifically for psoriasis.

Yes, Fucidin H Cream may be used as a treatment option for impetigo, especially when the skin condition is accompanied by inflammation. Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection, and Fucidin H Cream’s antibiotic component (fusidic acid) targets the bacteria causing the infection, while hydrocortisone helps reduce associated inflammation.

Fucidin H Cream is not recommended for treating burns. Burns are typically treated with specific burn ointments or creams, such as Germolene or Sudacrem that are designed to promote healing and prevent infection.

Yes, Fucidin H Cream is a prescription medication. To make sure that Fucidin H Cream is appropriate for your condition, you’ll need to complete an online medical assessment. Once reviewed by one of our UK registered pharmacists, they can prescribe Fucidin H Cream if it suits your needs.
