Levonelle (also known as Levinelle) is a tablet that is a single-dose medication used for emergency contraception and to prevent pregnancy. It is also known as the “morning after pill”.
The active substance in Levonelle emergency contraceptive is levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone. Levonelle works by preventing or delaying ovulation, i.e. stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg and preventing sperm from fertilising any egg you may have already released.
Levonelle should only be taken in the following cases:
One tablet should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours of unprotected sex. Even though Levonelle is referred to as the morning after pill, it can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sexual intercourse or failure of a contraceptive method. The sooner you take it, the more effective it is. is advised to take Levonelle if you have had unprotected intercourse in the early or late stages of your period cycle: earlier than day 10 or later than day 16 of a 28-day cycle.
After using emergency contraception, it is recommended to use a condom, diaphragm, spermicide, and cervical cap until the next menstrual period starts. Regular hormonal contraception can still be used.
The Levonelle morning after pill does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections. Get yourself regularly tested at your nearest Sexual Health or GUM clinic
Our prescribers will review your consultation and, if appropriate, issue a prescription. Our pharmacy will then dispense and deliver to you securely and discreetly. If you have any questions or concerns, contact our helpful prescriber and pharmacist, who will gladly help.
If you vomit within 3 hours of taking this medication, you will be required to take another dose
To see a full list of side effects, please refer to the Levonelle Patient Information Leaflet
The sooner you take Levonelle as emergency contraception after unprotected sex, the more effective it will be.
Remember, emergency contraception does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases.
