ellaOne is a single-dose medication used for emergency contraception. Also known as the “morning after pill”, ellaOne is the most effective morning after pill available in the UK. 

The morning after pill is not 100% effective at preventing pregnancy as it works by delaying ovulation. Depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, this may not be possible.

It’s also important to remember that emergency contraception does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases and should not be relied upon when having unprotected sex.

How effective is the ellaOne morning after pill?

ellaOne lowers your chances of getting pregnant by 85% if you take it within 5 days of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. In a clinical trial, ellaOne was shown to be 2.5 times more effective than Levonorgestrel when taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex. ellaOne states that out of 100 women who take ellaOne as emergency contraception, it is approximated that only 2 will become pregnant.

The ellaOne morning after pill can be taken at any stage of your menstrual cycle, but it will not be as effective if you have ovulated in the last 24 hours.

The ellaOne morning after pill works by delaying ovulation, which stops the egg from being released from the ovary. It contains ulipristal acetate, a substance that blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed for ovulation to occur.

ellaOne can be effective at preventing pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected sex. However, like other morning after pills, it is most effective when taken as soon as possible after sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy.

You can take ellaOne at any time or day or night.

How to take ellaOne

One ellaOne 30mg tablet should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 150 hours after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. You should take it with water.

If vomiting occurs within three hours of taking it, another tablet should be taken immediately.

After taking the ellaOne morning after pill, regular hormonal contraception can still be used.

Who can take the ellaOne morning after pill?

Most women can take the ellaOne morning after pill, including those who can’t take the combined contraceptive pill or patch. 

ellaOne may not be suitable for you if you are allergic to any ingredients it contains, if you have certain medical conditions or take certain medications, or if you are already pregnant. If you are breastfeeding, you should not breastfeed for one week after taking ellaOne.
