Chloramphenicol eye drops are an antibiotic treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis, an eye infection causing redness, itching, and sticky discharge. They can also be used to treat keratitis and blepharitis.

How do Chloramphenicol Eye Drops work for bacterial infections?

Chloramphenicol eye drops treat bacterial eye infections by stopping bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply. The active ingredient, chloramphenicol, attaches to the bacteria’s ribosomes (the part that makes proteins), blocking their ability to function. This prevents the infection from spreading and helps reduce symptoms like redness, swelling, and discharge.

Who can use Chloramphenicol Eye Drops?

Chloramphenicol eye drops for conjunctivitis are suitable for adults and children over 2 years old. At Click2Pharmacy, we can only sell this product to adults over 18 via our eye health clinic.

Do not use Chloramphenicol eye drops if you:

• Are allergic to chloramphenicol or any ingredients.
• Have a history of blood disorders or bone marrow diseases.
• Have frequent or a severe eye infection.
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

How to Use Chloramphenicol Eye Drops

1. Wash your hands thoroughly before using the eye drops.
2. Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
3. Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze one drop into the pocket.
4. Close your eye and press gently on the inner corner for about one minute.
5. Repeat for the other eye if necessary.
6. Replace the cap on the bottle and wash your hands again.

Chloramphenicol eye drops are typically used every 2 to 4 hours for the first 48 hours and every 4 hours thereafter. Treatment usually lasts 5 to 7 days, but it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions.
