What is Metronidazole used for?

Metronidazole 400mg tablets are used to treat a range of bacterial and parasitic infections, including:

  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women – a vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina
  • Trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection)
  • Dental infections such as gum ulcers
  • Infections of the blood, brain, lung, bones, and genital tract
  • Infected leg ulcers and pressure sores
  • Stomach and intestinal infections

Metronidazole can also be used to prevent infections after surgery.

How Metronidazole Tablets Work

Oral metronidazole is an antibiotic that targets and kills bacteria and parasites. It works by entering bacterial cells and disrupting their ability to produce essential proteins, DNA, and RNA. This stops the bacteria from growing and multiplying, so your immune system can clear the infection. Metronidazole is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in low-oxygen environments.

Who can use Metronidazole 400mg tablets?

Metronidazole 400mg tablets are suitable for most adults. However, they should not be taken by those who:

  • Are allergic to metronidazole or any of the listed ingredients
  • Have a liver problem
  • Have a disease of the nervous system
  • Are having kidney dialysis
  • Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding

If you’re unsure whether this medication is suitable for you, read the patient information leaflet or speak to one of our pharmacists following a short online consultation for advice.

How to Take Metronidazole Tablets

  1. Take your prescribed dose during or just after a meal
  2. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water (do not crush or chew the tablets)

Always take Metronidazole exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Complete the full course of treatment, even if you start feeling better. Do not stop and start taking the tablets, as this could cause unwanted side effects or reduce the effectiveness of treatment.

Metronidazole 400mg Dosage for Adults

The dosage of Metronidazole 400mg tablets depends on the type and severity of the infection being treated. Your pharmacist or doctor will advise you on the correct dose for your condition.

For bacterial vaginosis, the typical dosage is:

  • An initial dose of 800mg, followed by 400mg every 8 hours
  • Alternatively, 400mg taken twice a day for 7 days

For other bacterial infections, the usual adult dose is 400mg every 8 hours. The length of treatment will depend on your condition, but you need to complete the full course even if you start feeling better.

Metronidazole 400mg Tablets FAQs

You can buy Metronidazole tablets online from Click2Pharmacy. These antibiotic tablets are prescription-only, so you’ll need to complete a short online consultation. One of our licensed pharmacists will review your details to make sure the medication is suitable for you. Once approved, your treatment will be delivered straight to your door in discreet packaging.

It’s strongly advised not to drink alcohol while taking Metronidazole tablets and for 48 hours after finishing your course, as it might cause unpleasant side effects like feeling sick, vomiting, stomach pain, hot flushes, fast heartbeat, and headache.

When used to treat bacterial vaginosis, Metronidazole usually begins to alleviate symptoms within a few days of starting treatment. Most women notice improvement in symptoms such as discharge and odour within 2-3 days. However, you must complete the full course of treatment, even if you start feeling better, to make sure the infection is fully cleared.

Metronidazole shouldn’t be taken during pregnancy unless considered absolutely necessary. Consult a doctor or pharmacist if you are struggling with symptoms during pregnancy for alternative medications.

It’s better not to use Metronidazole if you’re breastfeeding, as small amounts may pass into the mother’s milk. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Metronidazole may interact with other medications, like blood thinners, lithium, medicines for epilepsy, and some antibiotics. Always disclose your medication history during your online consultation for a pharmacist’s review.

No, Metronidazole treats bacterial vaginal infections, not yeast infections like thrush. While bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections may share some symptoms, they are different conditions. Yeast infections like thrush are caused by fungal overgrowth, whereas bacterial vaginosis is caused by bacterial overgrowth.
