Similarly to Ozempic, Wegovy’s active ingredient is semaglutide – a hormone that can help control your appetite and, as a result, reduce your overall calorie intake. Wegovy prescription requirements vary depending on if you are a patient through the NHS or a private clinic.
You have the option to purchase a private Wegovy prescription. This will come with required weight management support. You can purchase Wegovy from your local pharmacy, however, it is not available over the counter. You must have an assessment, a prescription and ongoing support from a licensed UK pharmacist or GP.
Patients qualify for care through a specialist weight management programme if they have one or more weight-associated health conditions, like high blood pressure or heart disease. Additionally, they must also have a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI ranging from 30 to 34.9, provided that they meet the requirements for being referred to specialised weight management services. This also includes any other weight loss management programme being ineffective.
Wegovy contains the active substance semaglutide, which mimics the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Semaglutide helps regulate blood sugar by decreasing the production of insulin-opposing glucagon. It also helps to control your appetite, making you feel fuller for longer. As a result, people who take Wegovy often end up consuming fewer calories and therefore lose weight.
In clinical trials, patients using Wegovy saw an average reduction in body weight of 15%.
Before you use your Wegovy pen, you should also ensure you have the following to keep the injection site clean:
When ready, remove the pen cap from your Wegovy pen, clean the area and inject into one of the following areas:
Apply gauze or cotton wool to the injection site afterwards and apply pressure if needed.
Your pharmacist will provide you with detailed instructions on how and when to use your Wegovy prescription and monitor your weight loss over time.
As with many medications, Wegovy weight loss injections is not suitable for some groups of people and can have potential side effects. Not everyone will experience side effects whilst using Wegovy, however, it’s important to be aware of them should they arise.

Other important information about possible interactions of this drug can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet.
There are several products available from Click2Pharmacy that can help you to achieve similar goals to those obtained with Wegovy. Ozempic contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy and has had excellent results in clinical trials; however, it is not licensed as a weight loss medication in the UK. Another option is Saxenda, which is also a pre-filled injection used to suppress appetite. However, this is administered on a daily basis instead of weekly. For those who prefer medication in tablet form, Orlistat capsules can be a great option. These work by preventing fat from your diet from being absorbed into the body
Wegovy is an effective solution to help with weight loss, especially when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Wegovy contains semaglutide, which helps you lose weight by suppressing your appetite, sending “full” signals to your brain and slowing down the rate food passes through your digestive system. Studies and clinical trials have shown promising weight loss results in patients who have combined Wegovy with healthy lifestyle changes.
Wegovy helps you lose weight by mimicking a natural hormone in your body to make you feel less hungry.
When you eat, your levels of a hormone called GLP-1 increase. This hormone helps to control your appetite and how much you eat, by sending signals to your brain that you are getting full. It also slows down food leaving your stomach and keeps your blood sugar levels stable.
Wegovy’s active ingredient is Semaglutide, which mimics the GLP-1 hormone. When taking Wegovy, you don’t feel as hungry, which means you’ll likely eat less and, as a result, lose weight.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medication. A doctor or qualified health professional must check if you are suitable to use it and a prescription must be issued before you can buy this medication.
You can purchase a Wegovy private prescription from any licensed pharmacy in the UK, providing you have had an assessment and and been assigned weight loss management programme from a licensed UK pharmacist or GP.
You can get your Wegovy prescription filled at any local or online pharmacy that stocks Wegovy.
The advised strength for a Wegovy weekly injection is 2.4mg. You will start with a low dose that will be raised over a 16 week period to reach the maximum strength. This gradual increase will allow your body to adapt to the semaglutide whilstst reviewing any potential side effects.
The first dose of Wegovy will be set at 0.25mg, administered once a week. Every four weeks, this weekly dosage will increase until the 2.4mg maintenance dosage is reached. From then on, you’ll take the 2.4mg weekly injections until you fall to a healthy BMI or unless your medical team suggests a different course.
It is recommended to inject Wegovy in fatty areas of your body, such as your stomach, thighs and upper arms.
You can inject in the same part of your body each time you use Wegovy pens but you need to choose a different spot each time. Alternatively, you can us different parts of the body each time, providing you follow guidelines on the best place to inject Wegovy.

Wegovy is manufactured by Novo Nordisk Inc and was licensed for use in the UK in 2023. They also manufacture Saxenda, another weight loss injection available on prescription from our online weight loss clinic.
On 4th September 2023, Novo Nordisk announced that Wegovy will become available to people on NHS weight management services, or privately through a registered healthcare professional.
Wegovy cannot yet be prescribed outside of specialist weight management services, but in June 2023 the Department of Health announced a two-year pilot to tackle obesity, which will explore how Wegovy can be prescribed outside of these services.
