Mounjaro is a new weight loss injection authorised for weight loss and management in the UK. Initially a type 2 diabetes treatment, it contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide. When taking Mounjaro for weight loss, patients use one Mounjaro pen per week for their treatment and must follow a diet and exercise plan for best results.
Mounjaro pens come in different dose options, so you and your healthcare provider can find the best dose to suit your treatment.
New patients start on 2.5mg and move up to 5mg after 4 weeks. Once you have settled on 5mg, we will work with you to decide if you need to increase to a higher dose of 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg or 15mg. Each time your dose increases, you need to remain on it for 4 weeks before increasing.
Mounjaro weight loss injections contain the active ingredient Tirezepatide, which imitates two hormones: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones slow digestion, so food takes longer to pass through your digestive system. They also reduce your appetite, so you feel fuller for longer and eat less.
Clinical studies have shown that Mounjaro can lead to a 15% weight loss in patients after 9 months of taking Mounjaro for weight loss.
When announcing the authorisation of Mounjaro pens for weight loss management in the UK, the MHRA shared clinical trial results over 16 months showing up to 20% weight loss in patients taking Tirzapatide.
Mounjaro weight loss injections should be injected under the skin of your stomach, upper leg or upper arm.
You can use the same area of your body every time you Mounjaro pens, but choose a different spot for the injection site.
Mounjaro weight loss injections are suitable for individuals with a:

If nausea continues after following these guidelines, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you have a kidney-related health condition and experience diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting after using Mounjaro, ensure you increase your fluid intake to reduce the risk of dehydration and contact your GP, pharmacist or an out-of-hours doctor.
These are not all the possible side effects of Mounjaro. You should review the Patient Information Leaflet before starting the treatment so you are familiar with all potential side effects.
If you experience any side effects, even if they aren’t included in the patient information leaflet, report them to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme.
Mounjaro is an effective treatment for weight loss, primarily by slowing digestion and reducing appetite. It works by mimicking certain hormones that signal fullness to the brain, leading to significant weight loss, particularly when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. When considering Mounjaro for weight loss, it is important to discuss its suitability with your GP or pharmacist to ensure it fits your health needs.
In studies carried out by Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro pens, most instances of most nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea occurred when increasing the dose of Mounjaro. Once patients settled on the new dose, these side effects decreased over time.
Mounjaro pens should be kept in the fridge at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C. You should store them in their original packaging to protect the pens from direct light exposure.
Mounjaro pens are not suitable for freezing. If you store them towards the back of your fridge, check to make sure they are not frozen before using them.
You can keep Mounjaro at room temperature for up to 21 days, providing the temperature does not go any higher than 30°C. After 21 days, you need to dispose of any pens kept at room temperature.
You should dispose of Mounjaro pens in a sharps disposal container immediately after use.
As Mounjaro is a weight loss injection, you need to ensure you dispose of the pens safely. Do not throw them in your normal household or recycling bin.
Mounjaro pens come with an expiry date on the pen and box. You must not use them after this date has passed.
You can take Mounjaro at any time of day.
Mounjaro weight loss injections are intended to be used once per week. You should choose a day of the week where it will easily fit into your schedule. If you need to change the day of the week, make sure it has been at least 72 hours since you used your last Mounjaro pen.
If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If more than 4 days (36 hours) have passed since your last dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on schedule.
You should not use two Mounjaro pens within 3 days of each other.
It is not recommended to take any weight loss medication during pregnancy or when breastfeeding because it’s unknown if Mounjaro will harm your unborn baby or pass into your breast milk.
