Uses for Proctosedyl Ointment

Proctosedyl Ointment quickly relieves pain, irritation, itching, and discharge caused by external and internal haemorrhoids, as well as itching around the anus. Its ingredients help numb the area, reduce the size of the piles, and prevent infection.

How does Proctosedyl Ointment work for piles?

Proctosedyl Ointment contains several ingredients that work together to relieve internal and external piles.

  • Cinchocaine belongs to a group of medicines called local anaesthetics that block pain messages along the nerve fibres, helping to reduce pain and discomfort.
  • Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid and works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the back passage and surrounding areas.
  • Framycetin is an antibiotic that works to prevent or treat infections in the irritated skin around haemorrhoids.
  • Aesculin helps to strengthen the blood vessels, which can reduce the pressure and swelling associated with haemorrhoids, further alleviating symptoms like pain and itching.

Who can use Proctosedyl Ointment to treat haemorrhoids?

Proctosedyl is suitable for adults experiencing haemorrhoid-related symptoms. It should not be used by individuals with infections or known allergies to the ingredients. Proctosedyl is not suitable for long-term use and should only be applied for a maximum of 7 days. It is not suitable for use on the face or other body areas.

How To Use Proctosedyl Ointment for Piles

Follow these steps to apply Proctosedyl Ointment safely and effectively in the morning, evening, and after each bowel movement.

For external application:

  2. Screw the plastic applicator onto the tube.
  3. Insert the nozzle gently into the back passage.
  4. Squeeze the tube gently as you slowly pull it out.

Proctosedyl Ointment FAQs

No, Proctosedyl Ointment is a prescription-only medication and cannot be purchased over the counter. Following an online consultation, you can buy Proctosedyl Ointment online from our Haemorrhoids (Piles) Treatment clinic.

Proctosedyl Ointment usually starts to relieve pain, itching, and irritation within a few minutes to a few hours. For best results, Proctosedyl should be applied exactly as your pharmacist or doctor recommends.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your midwife or doctor before using Proctosedyl Ointment.

No, Proctosedyl Ointment is primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation in the back passage and the surrounding area caused by haemorrhoids. While its numbing effect may temporarily ease discomfort from fissures, it won’t promote healing.

If your pharmacist or doctor instructs you to apply some ointment deeper into your back passage, you can use the attachable plastic applicator included with the ointment for comfortable insertion into the rectum. If you have an anal fissure, it’s best to consult your doctor for appropriate treatment.

No, Proctosedyl Ointment should only be used to treat both internal and external haemorrhoids. Always use Proctosedyl Ointment exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has advised. Using it on other parts of the body, especially sensitive areas like the face, could cause irritation or other side effects not listed in the Patient Information Leaflet.

Proctosedyl Ointment is for short-term relief of haemorrhoid symptoms, but you shouldn’t use it for more than 7 days. Prolonged use can increase the risk of side effects, especially since It contains hydrocortisone. While hydrocortisone works to reduce inflammation and swelling, long-term use can lead to skin thinning, irritation, and an increased risk of infections.

If your symptoms persist longer than a week, stop using Proctosedyl, and tell your doctor or pharmacist so they can advise on alternative treatments.
