FAQs

Wegovy Weight Loss Injections: FAQs

Wegovy helps you lose weight by mimicking a natural hormone in your body to make you feel less hungry.

When you eat, your levels of a hormone called GLP-1 increase. This hormone helps to control your appetite and how much you eat, by sending signals to your brain that you are getting full. It also slows down food leaving your stomach and keeps your blood sugar levels stable.

Wegovy’s active ingredient is Semaglutide, which mimics the GLP-1 hormone. When taking Wegovy, you don’t feel as hungry, which means you’ll likely eat less and, as a result, lose weight.

Wegovy is a prescription-only medication. A doctor or qualified health professional must check if you are suitable to use it and a prescription must be issued before you can buy this medication.

You can purchase a Wegovy private prescription from any licensed pharmacy in the UK, providing you have had an assessment and and been assigned weight loss management programme from a licensed UK pharmacist or GP.

You can get your Wegovy prescription filled at any local or online pharmacy that stocks Wegovy.

The advised strength for a Wegovy weekly injection is 2.4mg. You will start with a low dose that will be raised over a 16 week period to reach the maximum strength. This gradual increase will allow your body to adapt to the semaglutide whilstst reviewing any potential side effects.

The first dose of Wegovy will be set at 0.25mg, administered once a week. Every four weeks, this weekly dosage will increase until the 2.4mg maintenance dosage is reached. From then on, you’ll take the 2.4mg weekly injections until you fall to a healthy BMI or unless your medical team suggests a different course.

It is recommended to inject Wegovy in fatty areas of your body, such as your stomach, thighs and upper arms.

You can inject in the same part of your body each time you use Wegovy pens but you need to choose a different spot each time. Alternatively, you can us different parts of the body each time, providing you follow guidelines on the best place to inject Wegovy.

You should not inject Wegovy pens into:

  • Tender, bruised, red, warm or hard skin
  • Areas with scars or stretch marks

You should store your Wegovy prescription pens in a fridge at a temperature between 2°C and 8°C before you start using it. Once you start using a Wegovy pen, you can continue to store it in a fridge or keep it at room temperature.

If the pen cap is still on, Wegovy pens can be kept at room temperature for up to 28 days.

Wegovy prescription pens are not suitable for freeing.

Your Wegovy prescription pen will come with an expiration date, which is on the back of the pen. The expiration date is typically 2 years from the manufactured date.

Once you have

Wegovy does have an expiration date, and it is important to check the packaging or consult with your healthcare provider to determine the specific expiration date of your supply. Using expired Wegovy may not be as effective and safe as using it before the expiration date.

On 4th September 2023, Novo Nordisk announced that Wegovy will become available to people on NHS weight management services, or privately through a registered healthcare professional.

Wegovy cannot yet be prescribed outside of specialist weight management services, but in June 2023 the Department of Health announced a two-year pilot to tackle obesity, which will explore how Wegovy can be prescribed outside of these services.
