Elocon 0.1% is a potent topical corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory skin conditions on the scalp like psoriasis and dermatitis, which cause itching and redness. Elocon works by calming the inflammation and soothing the skin. Because it’s a liquid, you can apply Elocon lotion for scalp psoriasis or dermatitis through your hair and onto the affected skin.
Elocon Scalp Lotion is a topical treatment that contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate 0.1%, which is a powerful corticosteroid. This medication works by reducing inflammation and calming the immune response in the skin that can cause symptoms like redness and itching.
The maximum recommended dosage of Elocon Scalp Lotion is a few drops applied once daily to the affected areas of the scalp. Don’t exceed this dosage or use the lotion for longer than your doctor has prescribed, as overuse can lead to thinning of the skin or other unwanted side effects.
For scalp psoriasis, NICE guidance recommends a potent corticosteroid like Elocon once a day for up to 4 weeks as a first treatment. If your psoriasis isn’t under control after 4 weeks, your prescriber may suggest a different type of steroid treatment or a product to soften and lift scale before you carry on.

Elocon Scalp Lotion is specifically formulated for children (aged 2 and over) and adults with dermatitis or psoriasis. We can only prescribe to adults over the age of 18.

Long-term use of Elocon can sometimes cause a steroid withdrawal reaction, either during treatment or within days to weeks of stopping. Signs include redness spreading beyond the treated area, burning or stinging, intense itching, peeling skin and oozing open sores. Speak to your doctor if you notice any of these.

One of the possible side effects of using Elocon Scalp Lotion is that it may cause excessive hair growth in the treated area. This side effect can occur with corticosteroid use. If you notice unusual hair growth, consult your pharmacist or doctor.
Elocon Scalp Lotion isn’t typically associated with hair loss. However, improper use or prolonged application of corticosteroids can sometimes lead to thinning of the skin, which could indirectly affect hair growth. If you experience hair loss, discuss it with your GP or pharmacist.
Elocon Scalp Lotion is designed for use on the scalp and isn’t recommended for sensitive areas like the eyebrows and eyelids. Applying it near the eyes can increase the risk of side effects, such as skin thinning or irritation.
If you accidentally get Elocon Scalp Lotion in your eyes, immediately rinse your eyes thoroughly with plenty of water. Continue rinsing for several minutes until the lotion is washed out. After rinsing, if you experience any irritation, redness or blurred vision, seek medical advice from NHS 111 or A&E immediately.
Elocon Scalp Lotion is a prescription-only medication and can’t be purchased over the counter. There’s no specific interaction between alcohol and Elocon Scalp Lotion. However, if you have any concerns about using the medication with alcohol, it’s best to consult your pharmacist or doctor.
How quickly Elocon Scalp Lotion works can vary from person to person. If you don’t see improvement or if symptoms worsen, consult your doctor.
Prolonged use of Elocon Scalp Lotion can lead to skin thinning, which may cause the skin to lose colour in the treated areas. If you notice any changes in your skin colour, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Use it as soon as you remember, then carry on as normal.
Using Elocon too often, over large areas or for a long time can affect some hormones in the body. If this happens, tell your doctor. If someone accidentally swallows the lotion, it shouldn’t cause problems, but see a doctor if you’re worried.
