Fucidin Cream is a topical antibiotic that contains the active ingredient fusidic acid. It is used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo and infected eczema and dermatitis. The cream is applied directly to the affected area of the skin.

It may also be prescribed for other bacterial skin infections if a pharmacist or doctor thinks it’s suitable.
Fucidin Cream only treats infections caused by bacteria. It won’t work on viral infections such as cold sores or fungal infections such as athlete’s foot.
Fucidin Cream contains fusidic acid, which is an antibiotic that works by interfering with the production of proteins that are essential for the bacteria to survive. This action stops the growth of the bacteria, allowing the body’s natural immune system to clear the infection.
Fucidin Cream and Fucidin H Cream both contain the antibiotic fusidic acid, but they aren’t the same medicine. Fucidin H Cream also contains hydrocortisone, a mild steroid that helps calm redness, swelling and itching.
This means Fucidin H Cream is usually prescribed for infected eczema or dermatitis that’s also inflamed. As a fusidic acid cream with no added steroid, Fucidin Cream treats the infection only.
Fucidin Cream is suitable for adults and children. However, it may not be suitable for everyone. It is important to consult a doctor or pharmacist before using Fucidin Cream, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any underlying health conditions.
Fucidin Cream should be applied three or four times a day, or as directed by your doctor. The duration of treatment will depend on the severity of your condition, but it is important to complete the full course of Fucidin Cream as prescribed.

Many people notice their skin starting to improve within a few days of using Fucidin Cream. How quickly it works depends on the type of infection and how much skin is affected. If your skin isn’t getting better after a week, or it’s getting worse, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
If you’re pregnant, think you might be or you’re breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using Fucidin Cream. Very little fusidic acid is absorbed through the skin, so it can usually be used as recommended by a healthcare professional. Avoid using it for a long time or in large amounts. If you’re breastfeeding, don’t apply it to your breasts.
Fucidin Cream doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge. There are no special storage conditions, so you can keep it at room temperature. Store it out of the sight and reach of children and don’t use it after the expiry date on the tube.
There are a few alternatives, depending on your skin condition. Fucidin H Cream and Fucibet Cream both combine fusidic acid with a steroid, so they’re used for infected eczema or dermatitis that’s also inflamed. Crystacide Cream is an antibiotic-free option for impetigo and other superficial skin infections. Our pharmacists will recommend the right treatment based on your consultation.
Interactions with other medicines are unlikely, as very little Fucidin Cream is absorbed into your body through the skin. You should still tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medicines you’re taking, have recently taken or might take. This includes other creams or ointments you’re using on the same area.
As with all antibiotics, using Fucidin Cream for a long time or repeatedly can increase the risk of bacteria becoming resistant to it. This means it may not work as well if you need it in the future. To lower the risk, only use it for as long as your pharmacist or doctor recommends and don’t use it on skin that isn’t infected.
Fucidin Cream isn’t licensed to treat acne. It’s sometimes prescribed for individual spots that have become infected, but it isn’t suitable for ongoing use on acne-prone skin because of the risk of antibiotic resistance. There are better options for acne, which our pharmacists can recommend.
You can use Fucidin Cream on your face if it’s been prescribed for an infection there. Take care to avoid your eyes, as some of the ingredients can irritate them. If you get any cream in your eye, rinse it out with cold water straight away and contact your doctor if your eye stays sore or your sight is affected.
You can cover the treated area with a dressing or bandage if your doctor or pharmacist has told you to. If the skin is covered, you may not need to apply the cream as often. A nappy on a baby can also act as a dressing.
Fucidin Cream can be used to treat cuts and grazes that have become infected with bacteria. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pus or pain that’s getting worse. It isn’t needed for clean cuts that are healing normally. Deep wounds, animal bites and wounds that won’t stop bleeding should be checked by a doctor.
Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you how long to use Fucidin Cream for. Treatment courses are short and usually last around a week. Using it for longer than you need can make side effects more likely and increase the risk of antibiotic resistance. If your infection hasn’t cleared by the end of your course, speak to your pharmacist.
All three creams contain the antibiotic fusidic acid to treat bacterial skin infections. Fucidin Cream contains fusidic acid only. Fucidin H Cream also contains hydrocortisone, a mild steroid, while Fucibet Cream contains betamethasone, a stronger steroid. The steroid creams are used when an infected skin condition, such as eczema, is also red and inflamed.
