Propecia hair loss tablets is licensed in the UK to treat hair loss. It contains the active ingredient Finasteride is an effective treatment for male pattern baldness also known as androgenetic alopecia.
Male Pattern baldness
Propecia can increase the number of hairs on the scalp but will not increase the amount of body hair. Finasteride 1mg tablets blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes hair loss in males. Treatment can prevent further hair loss and also cause regrowth. This product is only suitable for males. A five year study showed Finasteride was effective in over 80% of males stopping hair loss after 6-12 months. 66% of males reported hair regrowth
Important safety information – MHRA update, May 2026
On 11 May 2026, the MHRA strengthened safety warnings for finasteride. Finasteride can cause low mood, depression, suicidal thoughts and sexual problems, including reduced sex drive, difficulty getting an erection and ejaculation problems. Sexual side effects may continue after treatment has stopped and may contribute to mood changes, although they can also occur without changes in mood. Before starting treatment, tell your prescriber if you have ever experienced depression or suicidal thoughts. Stop taking finasteride 1mg immediately if you develop depression or suicidal thoughts and contact your doctor as soon as possible. If you experience sexual side effects, contact your prescriber to discuss whether treatment should continue. If you are at immediate risk of harming yourself, call 999 or go to A&E. Read and keep the patient alert card and information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
Propecia hair loss tablets should be taken once a day and can be taken with or without food. It should not be crushed or broken in half and should not be handled by women
The medication is not suitable for women, children or adolescents.
If there is a risk your partner could become pregnant, it is advisable to wear condoms as some of the drug is present in the semen
