Propecia hair loss tablets is licensed in the UK to treat hair loss. It contains the active ingredient Finasteride is a clinically effective treatment for male pattern baldness also known as androgenetic alopecia.

How does Propecia work

Propecia can increase the number of hairs on the scalp but will not increase the amount of body hair. Finasteride 1mg tablets blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes hair loss in males. Treatment can prevent further hair loss and also cause regrowth. This product is only suitable for males. A five year study showed Finasteride was effective in over 80% of males stopping hair loss after 6-12 months. 66% of males reported hair regrowth

How to take Propecia hair loss tablets:

Propecia hair loss tablets should be taken once a day and can be taken with or without food. It should not be crushed or broken in half and should not be handled by women

The medication is not suitable for women, children or adolescents.

If there is a risk your partner could become pregnant, it is advisable to wear condoms as some of the drug is present in the semen

Side effects to Propecia

the most common side effects (Less than 1 in 10 men) are

• Loss of Libido
• Erectile dysfunction
• Breast tenderness
• Low mood
• Allergic reactions

Although rare, it is important to be aware of severe side effects and contact your GP:

• Breast/Chest pain
• Breast lumps
• Nipple discharge

This is because there have been a few rare reports of breast cancer in men taking finasteride.
