Medication Name Avodart 0.5 mg Capsules

Used For Hair growth or treating an enlarged prostate
Active Ingredients Dutasteride

Patient Information Leaflet Avodart Capsules Patient Information Leaflet

What are Avodart 0.5mg capsules used for?

Avodart 0.5mg capsules are taken once a day and come as small, soft capsules that are easy to swallow. They’re used to treat two common conditions in men:

  • Male Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia). Avodart is commonly prescribed off-label for men experiencing progressive hair thinning or a receding hairline, typically due to hormonal sensitivity in the scalp.
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Avodart is licensed in the UK for treating BPH, which is an age-related, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition can cause troublesome urinary symptoms, like needing to urinate frequently, especially at night or weak urine flow or trouble starting urination.

How do Avodart 0.5mg capsules work?

Avodart contains dutasteride, a medicine that lowers levels of a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is made from testosterone and is linked to both hair loss and prostate growth in men.

By reducing the amount of DHT in the body, Avodart helps:

  • For hair loss: DHT shrinks the hair follicles over time, especially around the hairline and crown. This causes the hair to thin and eventually stop growing. Avodart slows this process down and supports hair regrowth.
  • For prostate enlargement (BPH): DHT also causes the prostate to grow larger with age, which can lead to urinary symptoms. Lowering DHT helps shrink the prostate, making it easier to urinate and reducing the need for surgery later on.

Although Avodart gets into the bloodstream quickly, it usually takes 3 to 6 months of daily use to notice visible changes or relief from symptoms.

Who can take Avodart 0.5mg capsules?

Avodart is suitable for adult men who are suffering from symptoms of BPH or male pattern baldness.

Avodart is not suitable for:

  • Women – particularly those who are or may become pregnant, as the active ingredient may harm a developing baby.
  • Children or teenagers
  • Men with severe liver disease – dutasteride is processed by the liver, so extra caution is needed.
  • Anyone with allergies to the ingredients such as dutasteride, other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, peanuts, or soya. Check the ingredients list carefully if you have known allergies.

How to Take Avodart 0.5mg Capsules

  • Take one 0.5mg capsule of Avodart once a day. Swallow the capsule whole with a drink of water. Do not chew, crush or open the capsule as the contents may irritate your mouth or throat.
  • Take it at the same time each day to help keep it part of your routine.
  • If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next one as normal. Do not take a double dose.

Avodart is designed for long-term use, so keep taking it as advised by your doctor or pharmacist, even if you don’t see results straight away. For many men, it can take 3-6 months to see an improvement in symptoms.

Women and children must not handle the capsules, as the active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin. If a capsule does leak and touches your skin, wash the area immediately with soap and water.

If you experience any unwanted effects while taking Avodart (even if they’re not mentioned here), it’s a good idea to speak with your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report any side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme.

Sharing your experience helps healthcare professionals monitor medicine safety and better understand how treatments affect people over time.

FAQs About Avodart

There’s no known interaction between alcohol and Avodart, but drinking in moderation is always best, especially if you have liver concerns. If you’re unsure, speak to your pharmacist or GP.

Avodart is a prescription-only medication. You can buy Avodart 0.5mg Capsules online from our online hair loss clinic by completing a free consultation. Once reviewed by a licensed pharmacist, your prescription will be issued and your medication delivered in discrete packaging.

Avodart can be safely used alongside topical minoxidil (like Regaine). The two treatments work in different ways and are often combined for better results. Always speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting combination treatments.

Avodart contains dutasteride, which blocks both Type I and Type II 5-alpha reductase enzymes. It reduces DHT levels more extensively than finasteride, which only blocks one type of reductase enzyme.

When comparing dutasteride vs finasteride, studies suggest that dutasteride may be more effective at slowing hair loss and encouraging regrowth, particularly in men who haven’t seen results with finasteride. However, because it’s more potent, it may also carry a slightly higher risk of side effects.

Avodart is used to treat both hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in the UK. Its use for hair loss is considered off-label, but it’s supported by clinical studies and commonly prescribed by hair loss specialists. Off-label prescribing is a standard and safe medical practice when there’s evidence to support its effectiveness and the prescriber is experienced.

If you stop taking Avodart, DHT levels will gradually return to their previous levels. This means hair loss is likely to resume within a few months, similar to stopping finasteride or minoxidil. Avodart is intended as a long-term treatment to maintain results.

Some men notice increased shedding in the first few weeks after they take dutasteride, including Avodart. This can be a normal sign that older hairs are making way for new ones in the growth cycle. Dutasteride works by lowering DHT, which helps slow hair loss and promote healthier, longer-lasting hair growth over time.

It’s important to be patient as visible improvement often takes several months. While Avodart cannot revive dead hair follicles, it can help reverse hair follicle shrinkage and may lead to significant hair regrowth in active follicles.
