Vydura is used to treat acute migraine and to prevent migraine attacks in adults. Taken when an attack starts, it can stop the migraine you’re having. Taken regularly as a preventative treatment, it can reduce how often your migraine attacks happen. It’s suitable for adults who’ve been assessed as appropriate for this type of migraine medication.
Vydura contains rimegepant, which belongs to a newer group of migraine medicines called gepants. During a migraine, levels of a protein called CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) can rise, and this is linked to migraine symptoms like pain.
Rimegepant attaches to the CGRP receptor and reduces the activity of this protein. Unlike triptans, it doesn’t work by narrowing blood vessels, which is why it may suit people who can’t take triptans.
Vydura is suitable for adults aged 18 and over who get migraine attacks.

Always take Vydura exactly as your prescriber tells you. To treat a migraine attack, take one 75mg wafer as soon as you need it, and no more than one in a day. If you’ve been prescribed Vydura to prevent migraines, take one wafer every other day.
Like all medicines, Vydura can cause side effects, though not everyone gets them.
This may affect up to 1 in 10 people.
Allergic reactions, including a severe reaction called anaphylaxis, are uncommon and may affect up to 1 in 100 people. Stop taking Vydura and contact your doctor straight away if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, which can appear several days after a dose. These include:

Drowsiness isn’t a recognised side effect of Vydura. Vydura also isn’t expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines. If you do feel unusually tired while taking it, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Vydura is licensed and available in the UK as a prescription-only treatment for migraine. It’s made by Pfizer and comes as a 75mg oral wafer that dissolves on or under the tongue. Vydura UK supply is available through a registered pharmacy or prescriber once it’s confirmed as suitable for you.
Vydura is available on the NHS as an acute treatment and to prevent migraine with or without aura in adults, though it’s used within specific NICE criteria. It’s usually prescribed when triptans haven’t worked well enough, aren’t suitable, or can’t be tolerated. A GP or headache specialist can confirm if you qualify for NHS treatment.

Some migraine medicines can be used alongside Vydura, but it depends on the specific treatment, so always check with your doctor or pharmacist first. A few medicines shouldn’t be combined with rimegepant, and some need extra time left between doses. Don’t start another migraine treatment without confirming it’s safe to take with Vydura.
Vydura and triptans work in different ways, but your doctor or pharmacist can advise if it’s suitable for you. They’ll take into account any other migraine medicines you’ve already used that day.
Common painkillers such as paracetamol aren’t among the medicines known to interact with Vydura, but it’s sensible to check before combining treatments. Some prescription medicines can affect how rimegepant works, so tell your pharmacist about anything else you take. If you’re unsure, ask before taking painkillers alongside it.
Rebound headaches, also known as medication overuse headaches, can develop with some migraine treatments when they’re used too often. Vydura isn’t linked to this in the same way as older painkillers, but sticking to the recommended dose is still important. If your headaches become more frequent, speak to your doctor.
It’s best to avoid Vydura during pregnancy, as its effects in pregnant women aren’t known. If you’re pregnant, think you might be or are planning a baby, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. If you’re breastfeeding, you and your doctor should decide together if it’s right for you.
Vydura doesn’t contain lactose. Its ingredients are rimegepant as the active substance, along with gelatin, mannitol, mint flavour and sucralose. If you have specific allergies or intolerances, check the full ingredient list before taking it.

Keep Vydura in its original blister to protect it from moisture and don’t store it above 30°C. Only remove the wafer when you’re ready to take it, and don’t keep it outside the blister for later use. As with all medicines, keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
