How Does Zidoval (Metronidazole) Gel Work?

Zidoval Gel contains the active ingredient metronidazole, a powerful antibiotic that directly targets the bacteria causing BV. By applying the gel inside the vagina, it delivers the medication precisely where it’s needed, effectively treating the infection and helping to prevent recurrence. Metronidazole works by entering bacterial cells and disrupting their DNA, which stops them from growing and multiplying.

What is Zidoval Vaginal Gel Used For?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel is specifically used to treat bacterial vaginosis, a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria.

Common BV symptoms include:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge (often grey or white with a thin, watery consistency)
  • Unpleasant fishy odour, particularly after sex
  • Vaginal itching or irritation
  • Burning sensation during urination

If left untreated, BV can lead to complications like sexually transmitted diseases (STIs), especially during pregnancy or before gynaecological procedures. Zidoval effectively treats the infection, relieving symptoms and restoring the natural balance of your bacteria.

Who Can Use Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel for bacterial vaginosis is suitable for most women seeking an effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis. However, you should not use this gel if you:

  • Are allergic to metronidazole or any of the gel’s ingredients
  • Have a known allergy to similar nitroimidazole antibacterials or parabens

Additionally, before using this medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you:

  • Have had blood disorders or diseases affecting the blood
  • Suspect you may have vaginal thrush
  • Are currently having your period
  • Are due for any blood tests
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have liver disease or a history of liver problems

If you’re unsure whether Zidoval is suitable for you, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment.

How To Use Zidoval Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment

The recommended dose is one applicator filled with 5g of Zidoval gel, inserted into the vagina once daily at bedtime for five consecutive days. It’s important to complete the full treatment course, even if your symptoms improve earlier.

To use Zidoval Gel, follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Before application: Wash your hands thoroughly. Use a fresh applicator for each dose, discarding it after a single use.
  2. Fill the applicator: Attach a disposable applicator to the tube of gel and fill it by gently squeezing the tube.
  3. Insert the gel: Lie on your back with knees bent. Insert the applicator into your vagina as far as is comfortable.
  4. Apply the gel: Press the plunger slowly to release the gel, then carefully remove and dispose of the applicator.
  5. After application: Rewash your hands.

If you forget a dose, apply it at the next bedtime. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Zidoval Vaginal Gel FAQs

If you’re pregnant, think you might be pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before using Zidoval Gel. They can provide advice tailored to your specific situation and assess whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

Yes, Zidoval Gel is designed to treat and cure bacterial vaginosis. It’s essential to complete the entire five-day course of treatment to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to help prevent it from returning.

Most people start to notice improvement in their BV symptoms within 2-3 days of beginning treatment with Zidoval Gel. However, it’s essential to complete the full five-day course of metronidazole, even if you feel better sooner. Finishing the entire treatment helps ensure the infection is completely cleared and reduces the risk of BV returning.

Zidoval Vaginal Gel is a prescription-only medication in the UK, so it cannot be bought over the counter. However, you can buy Zidoval Gel online from our bacterial vaginosis treatment clinic after completing a free consultation with one of our UK-registered pharmacists.

You should wait until you have finished menstruating before starting Zidoval treatment. Using the gel while you’re on your period may reduce its effectiveness and comfort.

No, you should avoid alcohol while using Zidoval Gel and for at least 48 hours after completing treatment. Alcohol can interact with metronidazole, leading to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, flushing, and a rapid heartbeat.

There are several other effective treatments available for bacterial vaginosis. Canesbalance Bacterial Vaginosis Vaginal Gel and Balance Activ Vaginal Gel are alternative approaches to treating BV. Canesbalance provides a triple-action formula that treats unpleasant odour and abnormal discharge, while Balance Activ Vaginal Gel restores and maintains the natural pH balance of the vagina.

In some cases, your doctor may prescribe metronidazole tablets (taken orally) as an alternative to the vaginal gel. Metronidazole tablets work systemically throughout the body and may be recommended for recurrent BV or when vaginal treatment isn’t suitable. The choice between gel and tablets depends on your individual circumstances and preferences.

It’s generally safe to swim while using Zidoval Gel. However, it’s best to apply the gel after swimming to make sure the medication remains in place and works effectively.

Metronidazole gel doesn’t interfere with the effectiveness of hormonal birth control, including birth control pills, patches, or rings. You can continue to use your usual contraception method while treating BV with Zidoval Gel.

Zidoval Gel is specifically formulated to treat bacterial vaginosis and is not effective for treating urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs, like cystitis, require different types of treatment, typically oral antibiotics. If you suspect you have a UTI, speak with your doctor or pharmacist about appropriate treatment options.

It’s generally recommended to avoid sexual intercourse during treatment with Zidoval Gel. This allows the medication to work effectively and prevents potential irritation. Additionally, the gel may weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, reducing their effectiveness.
