What is Thrush?

Thrush is a yeast infection caused by the fungus Candida. It can affect the mouth, throat, and genitals; vaginal thrush is especially common in women. While not usually serious, it often causes discomfort and irritation.

How Does Canesten External Cream Work?

Canesten Thrush External Cream contains clotrimazole 2% w/w, an antifungal that relieves external symptoms of vaginal thrush (vulvitis), such as itching, burning, redness and soreness. It is used alongside internal treatment for a complete solution.

Who Can Use Canesten External Cream?

This cream is intended for adults (16–60 years) for external sore areas due to thrush. However, do not use it if you:

  • Are allergic to clotrimazole or any ingredients (e.g. benzyl alcohol, cetostearyl alcohol)
  • Have undiagnosed or irregular genital symptoms

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you:

  • Have used thrush treatments fewer than two times in the past 6 months
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 16, over 60, or if this is your first thrush episode

If unsure, please consult the patient information leaflet or speak to your GP or pharmacist.

How To Use Canesten External Cream

  1. Wash your hands before and after application.
  2. Apply a thin layer gently around the entrance of the vagina or affected external area, 2–3 times daily.
  3. Continue treatment for at least 7 days, or up to 14 days for male partners, even after symptoms subside.

If symptoms persist beyond 7 days, consult a GP or pharmacist.

Canesten External Cream Side Effects

  • Itching, burning, redness or soreness at the application site
  • Mild rash, stinging, swelling or irritation

Serious Side Effects

If you experience signs of allergic reaction (e.g. swelling of face/lips/throat, trouble breathing, dizziness), stop use and seek medical attention immediately.

For a full list of side effects, please refer to the patient information leaflet.
