Gaviscon Double Action Tablets are designed to provide fast, long-lasting relief from the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion. They combine two key actions: neutralising excess stomach acid and forming a protective barrier over stomach contents to help stop acid from flowing back into the oesophagus. This dual effect helps ease discomfort and protect against further irritation.

What are Gaviscon Double Action Tablets used for?

These tablets are used to relieve symptoms such as:

• Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)
• Acid reflux
• Indigestion after meals or during pregnancy
• Discomfort caused by excess stomach acid

They can be taken to manage occasional flare-ups or more frequent symptoms when advised by a healthcare professional.

How do Gaviscon Double Action Tablets work?

Gaviscon Double Action Tablets contain three active ingredients:

• Sodium alginate – reacts with stomach acid to form a thick protective raft that floats on top of your stomach contents.
• Sodium bicarbonate – neutralises excess acid to reduce the burning sensation.
• Calcium carbonate – also works as an antacid, providing quick symptom relief.

The protective raft helps stop acid travelling back up into the oesophagus, while the antacid ingredients work to soothe existing discomfort.

Who can take Gaviscon Double Action Tablets?

Gaviscon Double Action Tablets are suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over. They may be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, but you should confirm suitability with a pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure.

They may not be suitable for people with certain health conditions, such as significant kidney or heart problems, or those on a restricted sodium or calcium diet.

How to take Gaviscon Double Action Tablets

Chew 2–4 tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily. Make sure you chew thoroughly before swallowing. Do not swallow whole or exceed the recommended dose.

Gaviscon Double Action Side Effects

Most people tolerate Gaviscon Double Action Tablets well. Side effects are uncommon but may include:

• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Allergic reactions (very rare)

If you experience swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical attention.

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Sodium alginate 250 mg, sodium bicarbonate 106.5 mg, calcium carbonate 187.5 mg.

Other ingredients: Mannitol (E421), copovidone, macrogol 20,000, aspartame (E951), magnesium stearate, acesulfame potassium (E950), peppermint flavouring, and other excipients.
