Metrogel 0.75% Gel is a prescription-only topical medicine used to treat rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness, pimples, and irritation on the face.
Metrogel contains metronidazole, an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. When applied to the skin, it helps to reduce the number of pimples and control facial redness by targeting bacteria and calming inflammation. This makes it especially effective for rosacea-related flare-ups.
Metrogel is suitable for adults who have been diagnosed with rosacea by a healthcare professional. It is not recommended for:
Visible improvement may be seen after a few weeks, with maximum benefits usually after 9 weeks or more. Continue treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if the symptoms improve early.
Like all medicines, Metrogel may cause side effects, but not everyone will experience them.
For a complete list of side effects, see the Metrogel Gel patient information leaflet. If you notice any side effects, inform your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are not listed here. You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting helps to improve the understanding of this medication’s safety.

You don’t need to avoid makeup or skin care while using Metrogel. Let the gel dry fully before applying non-irritating moisturisers and make-up. Avoid harsh, astringent, or alcohol-based products that may increase irritation.
Although Metrogel is applied to the skin, it’s best to avoid alcohol as a precaution, since metronidazole can interact with alcohol when taken orally.
Apply as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not apply extra gel to make up for a missed dose.
Metrogel is a prescription-only medication, but it can be purchased with a prescription from our rosacea clinic. When you purchase this product, we will ask you to complete a short online consultation to check if it is suitable. Our pharmacists will review your details and prescribe Metrogel if it is appropriate for your condition.
Do not combine Metrogel with other topical rosacea medications (like Finacea, Skinoren, or Rozex) without first consulting your GP, dermatologist, or prescribing pharmacist. They can advise the best routine based on your skin type and rosacea severity.
Metrogel is a topical antibiotic. It contains metronidazole, which has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. While it’s applied to the skin rather than taken orally, it still helps treat rosacea by reducing bacteria and calming inflammation in affected areas.
There are a few potential drug interactions to be aware of with topical metronidazole, especially if you are taking any of the following:
Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter products, supplements, and herbal remedies, before starting Metrogel.
“Metrogel is an effective treatment for rosacea. It helps calm redness and reduce inflammation, while being gentle on sensitive skin. Its targeted action makes it a popular choice for ongoing rosacea care.”
