Efracea is a prescription-only treatment for adults with rosacea that causes persistent redness, bumps, and flare-ups on the face. It helps reduce the frequency and intensity of these symptoms, so you have clearer and more comfortable skin.
Rather than acting as a traditional antibiotic, Efracea contains a much lower dose of doxycycline (just 40mg) which is too low to kill bacteria but still high enough to reduce inflammation effectively.
This low dosing allows Efracea to manage rosacea symptoms gently, without contributing to antibiotic resistance. Because of this, it is generally well-tolerated and suitable for longer-term use when prescribed and monitored by your doctor or pharmacist.
Efracea is suitable for adults with rosacea that causes spots, bumps, or facial redness.
Do not use if you:
It is important that you take Efracea exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has prescribed, as taking a higher dose can cause anti-biotic resistance.
Like all medications, Efracea capusles may cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
More serious side effects are rare but require urgent medical attention. These include signs of a severe allergic reaction like swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat. If you notice any of these symptoms, get immediate medical help.
For a full list of side effects, please see the Efracea patient information leaflet. For any side effects not listed in the patient information leaflet, you can report them to the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) to help monitor the medication’s safety.

Many people notice improvement by week 3, with clearer benefits over a 16-week course. Your doctor or pharmacist will usually review progress at 6 weeks.
Efracea is a prescription medication that contains doxycycline, which belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics. Although it is technically an antibiotic, Efracea is specially formulated as a low-dose, modified-release capsule. At 40mg, the amount of the tetracycline antibiotic called doxycycline is too low to have the bacteria-killing effects seen at higher doses used for infections.
Efracea is not available over the counter, but you can purchase it through our dedicated Rosacea Clinic. You’ll complete a short online consultation, which our UK-registered clinicians will review to check your suitability. If approved, your prescription will be processed and your treatment dispatched quickly and discreetly to your door.
Efracea can be used alone or alongside topical treatments like Rosex metronidazole cream, Finacea gel (azelaic acid), Soolantra Cream, or Mirvaso gel. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise on the best combination for your condition.
Take Efracea on an empty stomach in the morning. Leave 2-3 hours before having milk/dairy or supplements containing calcium, iron, zinc, or magnesium.
Occasional alcohol is generally fine. However, heavy or regular drinking can affect how well Efracea works. If you drink regularly, mention it to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you have missed a dose of Efracra, skip the missed capsule and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not double up.
“If you’re struggling with the bumps and redness that come with rosacea, Efracea is a great option. It’s gentle on the skin, easy to take, and works beneath the surface to calm inflammation without the side effects of higher-dose antibiotics. Many of our patients start to see real improvements within just a few weeks.”
