About Exorex Lotion

Exorex Lotion is a specially formulated coal tar solution 5% v/w cutaneous emulsion designed for the effective treatment of psoriasis. It acts as a keratoplastic agent, which means it helps to soften and shed the excess scales associated with psoriasis while reducing the inflammation and intense itching that often accompany the condition.

Exorex Lotion is the cornerstone of the Exorex Management System. Unlike traditional coal tar treatments, it is designed to be less messy and has a more subtle odour, making it a practical choice for daily management of psoriasis on both the body and the scalp.

Exorex Lotion is suitable for all ages, including children and the elderly, and is available in two convenient sizes:

What Is Exorex Lotion Used For?

Exorex Lotion is used to treat and manage mild to moderate psoriasis affecting the skin and scalp. It works by slowing down the rapid overproduction of skin cells that causes thick, scaly patches (plaques). It also provides antiseptic properties and significantly relieves the “itch-scratch” cycle, promoting long-term skin recovery.

Who Is Exorex Lotion Suitable For?

Exorex is suitable for adults, the elderly, and children. For sensitive skin or younger children, the lotion is versatile enough to be diluted with water.

Do not use Exorex Lotion if you:

  • Are allergic to coal tar or any other listed ingredients
  • Suffer from folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) or acne vulgaris
  • Have skin that reacts badly to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Have infected, broken, or weeping skin

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are applying the lotion to the face (use with caution)
  • Are using other prescribed topical treatments

Ingredients

Coal tar solution, Polysorbate 80, Ethanol, Dl-Alpha tocopherol, Vitamin F ethyl ester, Xanthan gum, Propyl hydroxybenzoate (E216), Methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218), Hydrogenated polyoxyl castor oil, Purified water.

How to Use Exorex Lotion

  1. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use.
  2. Ensure the affected skin areas are clean and dry.
  3. Apply a thin layer of the emulsion to the psoriasis plaques 2 to 3 times a day.
  4. Gently massage the lotion into the skin and allow it to dry completely (usually takes 2 minutes).
  5. Once dry, you may apply a compatible moisturiser over the top to keep the skin hydrated.

If using on the scalp, apply in the morning or evening and wash out with a non-irritating shampoo.

Possible Side Effects of Exorex Lotion

Like all medicines, Exorex can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them:

  • Skin irritation or redness
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Acne-like outbreaks or “tar acne”

If you experience severe irritation or an allergic reaction, stop use immediately and consult a doctor.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Fire Hazard: Do not smoke or go near naked flames. Fabric that has been in contact with this product burns easily.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Rinse immediately if contact occurs.
  • Coal tar makes the skin more sensitive to UV light; avoid sunbathing or sunlamps after application.
  • May cause staining of skin, hair, or light-coloured fabrics.

Storage Instructions

  • Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
