About Ferrograd Tablets

Ferrograd Tablets are a high-strength iron supplement containing Ferrous Sulfate 325mg. They are specifically formulated for the prevention and treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia. These tablets feature a specialized prolonged-release system (Gradumet), which allows the iron to be released gradually over several hours. This controlled release helps to reduce the likelihood of stomach irritation and gastrointestinal upset, which are common side effects associated with traditional iron supplements.

Ferrograd Tablets are suitable for adults and children over the age of 12 and are available in the following pack size:

  • Ferrograd 325mg prolonged-release tablets – 30 Tablets
Medication Name Ferrograd 325mg Prolonged-release Tablets
Active Ingredient Dried Ferrous Sulfate 325mg (equivalent to 105mg elemental iron)
Medication Form Prolonged-release film-coated tablet
Used to Treat Iron-deficiency anaemia and prevention of iron deficiency
Available Sizes 30-tablet pack
Who Can Use It Adults and children aged 12 years and over
Prescription Required? No – Pharmacy (P) medicine

What Is Ferrograd Used For?

Ferrograd is used to treat and prevent iron-deficiency anaemia, a condition where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen effectively. It is particularly useful for individuals who cannot tolerate standard iron supplements due to digestive issues, as the Gradumet technology ensures a gentle, sustained release of iron into the system.

Who Is Ferrograd Suitable For?

Ferrograd is suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age.

Do not use Ferrograd Tablets if you:

  • Are allergic to ferrous sulfate or any other ingredients
  • Suffer from a condition causing iron overload (e.g., haemochromatosis)
  • Have an active stomach ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease, or intestinal blockage
  • Are receiving repeated blood transfusions

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have intestinal diverticula or known inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (iron needs may change)
  • Are taking other medications, specifically antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones) or antacids

How to Take Ferrograd Tablets

  1. Take one tablet daily, preferably before a meal.
  2. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
  3. Do not crush, chew, or suck the tablet, as this can cause mouth ulcers or tooth discolouration.
  4. Avoid taking Ferrograd within 2 hours of tea, coffee, eggs, milk, or calcium supplements, as these can reduce iron absorption.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one.

Possible Side Effects of Ferrograd

Common side effects:

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Blackened stools (this is harmless and expected with iron supplements)

Rare but serious:

  • Mouth or throat ulcers (if tablets are chewed or sucked)
  • Allergic reactions (rash or swelling)

Warnings and Precautions

  • Keep out of reach of children: An overdose of iron can be fatal in young children.
  • Do not take more than the recommended daily dose.
  • Iron supplements can interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics; consult your pharmacist for timing.
  • Seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of treatment.

Storage Instructions

  • Store below 25°C in a dry place.
  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
