About Ferrous Fumarate Tablets

Ferrous Fumarate Tablets are an effective iron supplement used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia. Each tablet contains ferrous fumarate, a form of iron that is easily absorbed by the body to help restore healthy red blood cell levels and reduce symptoms of exhaustion. Iron is essential for the production of haemoglobin, which transports oxygen throughout the body.

Ferrous Fumarate is available in two strengths to suit different treatment requirements:

What Is Ferrous Fumarate Used For?

Ferrous Fumarate is primarily used to treat anaemia caused by a lack of iron in the diet, blood loss, or during pregnancy. By increasing iron levels, it helps the body produce more red blood cells, reversing symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and pale skin. It is also used as a preventative measure for those at risk of becoming iron deficient.

Who Is Ferrous Fumarate Suitable For?

Ferrous Fumarate is suitable for adults, the elderly, and children, provided the correct dosage is followed.

Do not take Ferrous Fumarate if you:

  • Are allergic to ferrous fumarate or any listed ingredients
  • Have conditions causing iron overload (e.g., haemochromatosis)
  • Suffer from active stomach ulcers or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Have a history of repeated blood transfusions
  • Suffer from anaemia not caused by iron deficiency

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have a history of stomach ulcers or intestinal disease
  • Have had a surgical removal of part or all of the stomach
  • Are currently taking other supplements containing iron
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (doctor’s supervision is required)

Ingredients

Other ingredients: Maize starch, sodium lauryl sulfate, gelatin, and liquid paraffin (check specific pack for full list of excipients).

How to Take Ferrous Fumarate Tablets

  1. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  2. Do not suck, chew, or keep the tablet in your mouth as it can cause mouth ulcers.
  3. For maximum absorption, take on an empty stomach before meals.
  4. Avoid taking with tea, coffee, eggs, or milk, as these can reduce iron absorption.
  5. If the tablets cause stomach upset, they may be taken with or after food.

Continue taking the tablets for the full duration recommended by your doctor, even if symptoms improve, to replenish your body’s iron stores.

Possible Side Effects of Ferrous Fumarate

Common side effects:

  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Nausea or loss of appetite

  • Darkening of stools (this is harmless and expected)

Warnings and Precautions

  • Safety Warning: Keep out of reach of children. An overdose of iron can be fatal in young children.

  • Stools may appear darker or black; this is normal and not a cause for concern.
