About Galfer Capsules

Galfer Capsules are a high-strength iron supplement containing 305mg of ferrous fumarate. This active ingredient is a form of iron used to prevent and treat uncomplicated iron deficiency anaemia. By replenishing the body’s iron stores, Galfer helps the blood carry oxygen more effectively, addressing the root cause of fatigue and weakness associated with low iron levels. Galfer Capsules are suitable for adults, the elderly, and children over 12 years of age. They are commonly used when dietary intake alone is insufficient to maintain healthy iron levels.

What Are Galfer Capsules Used For?

Galfer Capsules are used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia. This condition occurs when the body lacks enough iron to produce sufficient haemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen. Regular use of Galfer helps restore these levels, relieving symptoms such as exhaustion, pale skin, and heart palpitations.

Who Are Galfer Capsules Suitable For?

Galfer is suitable for adults and children over 12. It is particularly beneficial for those with increased iron requirements, such as during pregnancy (after the first 13 weeks) or following blood loss. Do not use Galfer Capsules if you:

  • Are allergic to ferrous fumarate or any other ingredients
  • Have diseases causing iron “overload” (e.g., haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis)
  • Suffer from other types of anaemia (unless iron deficiency is also present)
  • Have a history of stomach ulcers or active inflammatory bowel disease
  • Have had repeated blood transfusions

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have a history of intestinal or stomach problems
  • Are currently taking other supplements or medications (especially antibiotics)
  • Are in the first trimester of pregnancy

How to Take Galfer Capsules

  1. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.
  2. Ideally, take the dose before meals on an empty stomach for maximum absorption.
  3. Avoid taking the capsules with tea, coffee, milk, or eggs, as these can reduce iron absorption.
  4. If gastric irritation occurs, you may take the capsule after a meal to minimize discomfort.

Do not exceed the recommended dose. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but do not double up.

Possible Side Effects of Galfer Capsules

Common side effects include:

  • Darkening of the stools (this is harmless and expected with iron)
  • Stomach upset, including nausea or discomfort
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite

Rarely, allergic reactions may occur. If you experience swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, seek medical help immediately.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Safety Warning: Contains iron. Keep out of reach of children, as an accidental overdose can be fatal.
  • Do not take within 2 hours of taking indigestion remedies (antacids) or calcium supplements.
  • Consult a doctor if symptoms do not improve after 28 days of treatment.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C.
  • Keep in the original container to protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
