About Galfer Syrup

Galfer Syrup is an effective oral liquid medication used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia. Each 5ml dose contains 140mg Ferrous Fumarate, which provides the essential iron needed by the body to produce haemoglobin and healthy red blood cells. By restoring iron levels, Galfer Syrup helps to alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and pale skin associated with low iron.

This sugar-free syrup is an ideal alternative for individuals who find it difficult to swallow tablets. Galfer Syrup is suitable for adults, the elderly, and children, and can also be used as an iron supplement during pregnancy.

What Is Galfer Syrup Used For?

Galfer Syrup is used to replace low iron stores in the body. It is specifically indicated for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia, a condition where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues. Regular use helps boost energy, reduce exhaustion, and improve overall vitality.

Who Is Galfer Syrup Suitable For?

Galfer Syrup is suitable for adults, children, and pregnant women.

Do not use Galfer Syrup if you:

  • Are allergic to ferrous fumarate or any other ingredients
  • Suffer from conditions causing iron overload (e.g., haemochromatosis)
  • Have an active stomach ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Have received repeated blood transfusions

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have a history of stomach ulcers
  • Have had a surgical removal of part or all of the stomach
  • Are taking other medications, particularly antibiotics (tetracyclines) or antacids

How to Take Galfer Syrup

  1. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use to ensure the medicine is mixed.
  2. Use a medicinal spoon or syringe to measure the exact 5ml or 10ml dose.
  3. It is best taken before meals on an empty stomach for maximum absorption.
  4. If stomach upset occurs, you may take it with or after food.
  5. Avoid taking with tea, coffee, milk, or eggs, as these can reduce iron absorption.

Possible Side Effects of Galfer Syrup

Like all iron supplements, Galfer may cause side effects, though not everyone gets them:

  • Stomach upset: Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
  • Bowel changes: Constipation or diarrhoea.
  • Darkened stools: It is normal for your stools to appear black while taking iron; this is harmless.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Important: Keep out of reach of children. An overdose of iron can be fatal in young children.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
  • Contains E214, E216, and E218 (parahydroxybenzoates), which may cause allergic reactions.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed and in its original carton to protect it from light.
  • Do not use after the expiry date shown on the label.
