What is Minocycline 100mg MR used for?

Minocycline is an antibiotic used to treat moderate to severe acne in adults and children over 12. It works by reducing the bacteria that contribute to acne and inflammation.

It’s usually prescribed when other topical or oral acne treatments have not been effective.

How does Minocycline work for acne?

Minocycline is a type of antibiotic medicine. It works by targeting bacteria on the skin that are linked to acne – mainly a kind called Propionibacterium acnes. These bacteria cause redness, swelling, and spots by irritating the skin. By reducing the amount of bacteria, Minocycline helps calm the skin and prevent new spots from forming.

The “modified-release” (MR) part means the medicine is made to release slowly in your body. So instead of needing to take it several times a day, you only need one capsule daily. It keeps a steady level of medicine in your system all day, which makes it more convenient and can also reduce side effects.

Who can take Minocycline MR capsules?

This medication is suitable for adults and teenagers aged 12 years or older who have been diagnosed with acne.

Do not take Minocycline if you:

  • Are allergic to minocycline or other tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline or oxytetracycline
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to conceive
  • Have kidney or liver disease
  • Have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or myasthenia gravis

How to Take Minocycline 100mg MR Capsules

  1. Take one capsule each day, preferably at the same time daily. You may take it with or without food.
  2. Swallow whole with a glass of water while sitting or standing upright. Do not chew, crush, or suck the capsule.
  3. Avoid taking antacids, supplements, or vitamins containing calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc within 3 hours of your dose.

Treatment usually continues for several weeks before visible improvement. If your acne hasn’t improved after 6 months, your doctor or pharmacist will reassess your treatment.

Minocycline as an Acne Treatment

A View From Our Expert

“If you’ve been struggling with acne for a while and creams or gels haven’t improved it, Minocycline is often a good next step. It works from the inside to calm inflammation and reduce breakouts, and taking only one capsule a day makes it easier to stick with.”
