Minocycline is an antibiotic used to treat moderate to severe acne in adults and children over 12. It works by reducing the bacteria that contribute to acne and inflammation.
It’s usually prescribed when other topical or oral acne treatments have not been effective.
Minocycline is a type of antibiotic medicine. It works by targeting bacteria on the skin that are linked to acne – mainly a kind called Propionibacterium acnes. These bacteria cause redness, swelling, and spots by irritating the skin. By reducing the amount of bacteria, Minocycline helps calm the skin and prevent new spots from forming.
The “modified-release” (MR) part means the medicine is made to release slowly in your body. So instead of needing to take it several times a day, you only need one capsule daily. It keeps a steady level of medicine in your system all day, which makes it more convenient and can also reduce side effects.
This medication is suitable for adults and teenagers aged 12 years or older who have been diagnosed with acne.
Do not take Minocycline if you:
Treatment usually continues for several weeks before visible improvement. If your acne hasn’t improved after 6 months, your doctor or pharmacist will reassess your treatment.
Like all medicines, Minocycline can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
If you experience severe allergic reactions, persistent headaches, or unusual skin pigmentation, stop treatment and contact your doctor immediately. See the patient information leaflet for the full list of side effects.
If you notice any side effects, inform your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are not listed here. You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting helps to improve the understanding of this medication’s safety.

Minocin is a brand name for minocycline. They contain the same active ingredient, but Minocin is a branded version, while others may be generic. Both work the same way.
Yes, long-term use of Minocycline can sometimes cause dark staining of the skin, nails, teeth, or gums. It usually fades after stopping treatment, but can be permanent in rare cases.
Acnamino MR Capsules 100mg is a branded version of Minocycline. They both contain the same active ingredient – minocycline hydrochloride – and are used in the same way to treat moderate to severe acne.
It’s unlikely, but if you have sickness or diarrhoea while taking Minocycline, the pill may not work as well. Use extra protection if this happens.
Minocycline should not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It can harm an unborn baby and can also pass into breast milk. If you are pregnant, think you might be, or are breastfeeding, speak to a GP or pharmacist about safer alternatives.
Usually, Minocycline is taken for a few months. Your GP will review your progress and decide how long to continue. Long-term use may require regular checks for side effects.
“If you’ve been struggling with acne for a while and creams or gels haven’t improved it, Minocycline is often a good next step. It works from the inside to calm inflammation and reduce breakouts, and taking only one capsule a day makes it easier to stick with.”
