What Are Nexium Control Tablets Used For?

Nexium Control Tablets are designed for adults who experience frequent heartburn (twice a week or more). Whether it’s triggered by rich food, eating too late, or stress, Nexium Control helps reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces and relieves the burning chest discomfort and sour taste caused by reflux.

Nexium Control contains 20mg of esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by reducing excess stomach acid. It is used for the short-term treatment of reflux symptoms such as heartburn and acid regurgitation. These symptoms often appear after eating, when lying down, or at night. Nexium Control helps reduce acid production at the source, providing lasting relief for up to 24 hours.

How quickly does Nexium Control work?

Nexium Control is not designed to offer instant relief like an antacid. Instead, it works gradually by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. Most people begin to feel noticeable improvement within 2 to 3 days of starting treatment, but it can vary. It’s important to continue taking one tablet daily, even if you don’t feel better right away. For the best results, take Nexium Control consistently for up to 14 days, or until your heartburn and acid reflux symptoms are fully under control.

Who Can Take Nexium Control?

Nexium Control is suitable for adults aged 18 and over who suffer from frequent heartburn or acid reflux.

Do not take Nexium Control if you:

  • Are allergic to esomeprazole or other PPIs
  • Are taking nelfinavir (for HIV)
  • Have persistent chest pain or unexplained weight loss

Speak to your pharmacist or GP before taking if you:

  • Have liver or kidney problems
  • Are over 55 with new or changed reflux symptoms
  • Have had a stomach ulcer or digestive surgery
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have black stools, unexplained vomiting, or difficulty swallowing

How to Take Nexium Control

You should take 1 x 20mg tablet per day and swallow while with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

You may need to take the tablets for 2–3 days in a row before your symptoms improve. For best results, take daily for up to 14 days, but do not exceed more than 1 tablet in 24 hours.

If symptoms persist or worsen after 14 days, consult a doctor for a more advanced treatment and advice on managing your symptoms.

Nexium Control Tablets FAQs

Nexium Control is intended only for short-term use. It’s suitable for adults experiencing frequent heartburn (twice or more per week), and can be used for up to 14 consecutive days. If your symptoms persist beyond this or return soon after stopping treatment, you should speak to your GP or pharmacist. Long-term or repeated use of proton pump inhibitors without medical supervision may hide underlying conditions and could increase the risk of certain side effects, such as low magnesium levels or gut infections.

Yes, antacids such as Gaviscon, Rennie or other alginate-based products can be used alongside Nexium Control if needed. Antacids work quickly to neutralise existing acid in the stomach, offering short-term symptom relief while Nexium Control gets to work in the background reducing acid production. However, you should not take Nexium Control with other acid-reducing medications, such as other proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers like ranitidine or famotidine.

Yes. Nexium Control can be taken with or without food, at any time of the day. For convenience, some people prefer taking it in the morning before breakfast. The most important thing is to take it once daily and to swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet, as it contains coated granules that ensure the medicine is released properly in the body.

Yes. Nexium Control contains 20mg of esomeprazole, which is the active ingredient used in many prescription-strength reflux and ulcer medications. Esomeprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. The key difference is that Nexium Control is licensed for short-term, over-the-counter use, whereas higher doses or long-term treatment may require a prescription and ongoing medical supervision.

If you forget to take your Nexium Control tablet, simply take it as soon as you remember that day. If you miss a full day, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose the next day to make up for it. The medication is designed to be taken once daily, and taking more than the recommended dose does not provide faster or stronger relief.

If your heartburn or acid reflux hasn’t improved after 14 consecutive days of using Nexium Control, you should stop taking the tablets and speak to your GP. You may need further investigation or a prescription treatment. Persistent symptoms may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), stomach ulcers, or inflammation of the food pipe (oesophagitis). Your GP may recommend further testing or a different treatment plan.

Nexium Control is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by your doctor. Although there is no strong evidence of harm, esomeprazole should be used with caution and only when the potential benefit outweighs any risks. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive, always speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting Nexium Control or any over-the-counter medication.
