Uses for Nystaform HC Cream & Nystaform HC Ointment

Nystaform HC cream and Nystaform HC ointment are used to treat skin infections caused by bacteria or fungi (particularly Candida), including:

  • Ringworm (tinea corporis): A fungal skin infection.
  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis): A fungal infection affecting the feet.
  • Infected nappy rash: Skin irritation in the nappy area made worse by infection.

Both the cream and ointment can reduce symptoms like itching, redness, and discomfort as they contain a mild steroid.

How do Nystaform HC Cream & Nystaform HC Ointment work for skin infections?

Both Nystaform cream and Nystaform ointment contain three active ingredients which help control the infection and soothe the skin:

  • Nystatin is an antifungal which tackles fungus on the skin.
  • Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic which helps to eliminate bacteria.
  • Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid that reduces inflammation and itching.

What’s the difference between Nystaform HC Cream and Nystaform HC Ointment?

Which one should I use?

You should choose Nystaform HC cream if your skin is moist or the infection is in skin folds and you want a quicker-absorbing product.

Nystaform HC ointment might be better if your skin is dry, cracked, or needs more moisture and protection.

If you’re unsure which is best for your condition, your pharmacist or GP can help guide you based on where and how you’re using it.

Who can use Nystaform HC to treat skin infections?

Nystaform HC cream and ointment can be used by adults and children. However, at Click2Pharmacy, we can only prescribe to adults over 18.

Do not use if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • Have tuberculosis of the skin
  • Are breastfeeding, pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby

How to Use Nystaform HC

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the cream or ointment.
  2. Clean and dry the affected area. Apply to the skin only.
  3. Apply a thin layer of the cream or ointment to the infected area 2-3 times daily.
  4. Gently rub the cream or ointment in until it is absorbed.
  5. Wash your hands after application.

Use the cream or ointment for a maximum of 7 days. If a new infection appears, stop using the cream or ointment and speak to your doctor or pharmacist, as an alternative treatment may be needed.

Nystaform HC Side Effects

Like all medications, Nystaform HC cream and Nystaform HC ointment can cause side effects. Some possible side effects include:

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild skin irritation or redness
  • Allergic reactions (e.g. rash, itching)

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing).

If you experience any of these side effects, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately. For a full list of the side effects, please check the Nystaform HC Cream Patient Information Leaflet or the Nystaform HC Ointment Patient Information Leaflet.

Steroid Withdrawal Reaction

In some cases, especially after prolonged or repeated use, stopping treatment with a steroid-containing cream or ointment like Nystaform HC may lead to a withdrawal reaction.

This can cause symptoms that are different from your original condition and may include intense redness that spreads beyond the area originally treated, a burning or stinging sensation, severe itching, peeling skin, and oozing sores. If you notice these symptoms after stopping treatment, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before restarting use.

Reporting Nystaform HC Side Effects

If you notice any side effects, tell your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are not listed here. You can also report side effects through the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting helps to improve the understanding of this medication’s safety.

Nystaform HC Warnings

  • Keep Nystaform HC ointment and cream out of sight and reach of children.
  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth or broken skin.
  • Store below 25°C.
  • Do not smoke or go near naked flames while using Nystaform HC ointment, as it’s a fire hazard. The ointment can soak into fabrics like clothing, bedding, or dressings, making them more flammable. Washing clothes and bedding may help reduce the build-up of products but does not completely remove the risk.
  • Use Nystaform HC ointment on large areas of your skin only if told to do so by your doctor. Doing so can increase the amount of hydrocortisone absorbed into your bloodstream, which may raise the risk of side effects, especially if used over a long period or under dressings.
  • Cetostearyl alcohol may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).

Visit our online thrush treatment clinic to find appropriate medications.

Nystaform HC is not usually used to treat eczema. However, it may be prescribed in certain cases where eczema has become infected with bacteria or fungi. If your eczema is infected (for example, if it’s weeping, crusty, or getting worse despite normal treatment), a doctor might recommend Nystaform HC for short-term use.

Always speak to your GP or pharmacist before using Nystaform HC on eczema, especially in sensitive areas like the face or on children.

For non-infected eczema, a standard steroid cream or emollient is usually more appropriate. Visit our online eczema & dermatitis treatment clinic for alternative medications.
