Oral semaglutide comes in more than one tablet: the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus. They look like the same medicine on paper: same active ingredient, same once-a-day tablet, same manufacturer. The difference is what each one is for.

What is the Wegovy pill (semaglutide)?
The Wegovy pill is an oral form of semaglutide, licensed for weight management. It was approved by the MHRA on 11th June 2026 as the first GLP-1 tablet for weight loss in the UK, giving people a needle-free alternative to injectable Wegovy.
It contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. Semaglutide mimics a natural gut hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which your body releases after eating to signal fullness to your brain. By boosting that signal, the Wegovy pill reduces appetite, slows stomach emptying and helps you feel fuller for longer, so you eat less throughout the day.
In the UK, the Wegovy pill is licensed for adults living with obesity (a BMI of 30 or above), or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. It’s used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, not on its own.
The dose builds up gradually. You’ll start at 1.5mg once a day, then step up to 4mg, 9mg and finally a 25mg maintenance dose, with at least a month at each level. This slow build gives your body time to adjust and helps keep side effects to a minimum.
What is Rybelsus (semaglutide)?
Rybelsus is also a semaglutide tablet, but it’s only licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. It was the first oral semaglutide medicine available in the UK and, like the Wegovy pill, it’s made by Novo Nordisk.
It works the same way at a chemical level, mimicking GLP-1 to help regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite. The difference is the dose. Rybelsus is prescribed at lower strengths to improve blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes: you start at 3mg once a day for 30 days, move up to 7mg, and can increase to a maximum of 14mg if your clinician recommends it. It’s used alongside diet and exercise.
Some people taking Rybelsus for diabetes can lose a modest amount of weight, but it isn’t designed or licensed as a weight loss treatment, and its doses aren’t high enough to match what the Wegovy pill achieves for weight management.
Are the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus the same thing?
They share the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and they’re both once-daily tablets from the same manufacturer, so it’s easy to see why people mix them up. But they aren’t the same medicine.
Beyond the shared active ingredient, the two tablets are also taken in the same way. You take one tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with a small sip of plain water and nothing else. Swallow it whole, without splitting, crushing or chewing it, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Oral semaglutide is hard for the body to absorb, so getting this routine right is what makes either tablet work as intended.
What are the side effects of the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus (oral semaglutide)?
Because both tablets contain semaglutide, their side effects are broadly similar. Most are related to digestion, and most people find they ease off as the body gets used to the medicine.
The most common side effects of both include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Indigestion or stomach pain
- Headache
- Tiredness
These effects tend to be strongest when you first start or move up to a higher dose, and usually settle within a few days or weeks.
Both medicines can cause more serious side effects, though this is less common. These include gallbladder problems like gallstones, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), and low blood sugar, which is more likely if you’re also taking other diabetes medications.
Speak to a clinician straight away if you have severe stomach pain that won’t go away, signs of an allergic reaction, or symptoms of low blood sugar like dizziness, shaking, or confusion.
The Differences Between the Wegovy Pill and Rybelsus
Licensed Use
Rybelsus is licensed to manage type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is licensed specifically for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition.
Dosing and Strength
Rybelsus can be prescribed up to a maximum of 14mg a day. The Wegovy pill goes higher, up to a 25mg maintenance dose, because weight management needs a stronger dose than blood sugar control. Both build up gradually to reduce side effects, but they follow different step-up schedules.
Effectiveness for Weight Loss
For weight loss specifically,, people taking the 25mg Wegovy pill lost an average of around 17% of their body weight over 64 weeks, alongside diet and lifestyle changes.
Rybelsus wasn’t designed for weight loss, and its lower diabetes doses don’t produce the same results..
If weight management is your goal, the Wegovy pill is the licensed oral option, meaning you take semaglutide as a daily tablet rather than a weekly weight-loss injection.
Can I switch from Rybelsus to the Wegovy pill?
It’s possible, but it’s a decision for your prescriber rather than one you make on your own. Because Rybelsus and the Wegovy pill are different licensed products at different doses, a clinician won’t simply match your Rybelsus dose. They’ll review your health, BMI and history first, then set the right starting dose for weight management and build it up from there.
If you’ve been taking Rybelsus and you’re interested in weight loss treatment, keep taking your current medicine as prescribed until you’ve spoken to a clinician.

Wegovy Pill vs Rybelsus FAQs
Can I take Rybelsus for weight loss?
Rybelsus is not licensed for weight loss in the UK, it’s licensed for type 2 diabetes. Some people have used Rybelsus off-label to lose weight, but even at its 14 mg maximum, the effect is modest and secondary. If weight management is your goal, the Wegovy pill is the licensed oral semaglutide for weight loss.
What’s the difference between Wegovy, Rybelsus and Ozempic?
Wegovy and Rybelsus both contain semaglutide, and so does the diabetes injection Ozempic. The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight management, while Rybelsus and Ozempic are licensed for diabetes.
Can you drink alcohol while taking Rybelsus?
Yes, you can drink alcohol in moderation while taking Rybelsus, but be cautious. Alcohol may increase your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if you’re also taking other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas. Alcohol can also worsen some of Rybelsus’s side effects, particularly digestive issues like nausea or being sick. If you do choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation and be aware of how it affects you.
Do you have to drink a lot of water while taking Rybelsus?
You don’t need to dramatically increase your water intake when taking Rybelsus, but you need to stay well-hydrated. Rybelsus can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, which may lead to dehydration if not managed properly. Drinking adequate water throughout the day helps reduce these side effects and supports your overall health.
Can I buy Rybelsus online in the UK?
Rybelsus can be bought online in the UK, but only after an online consultation where you answer questions about your medical history and current medications to check it’s suitable for you. If it’s approved, a prescriber issues the prescription.
Legitimate online pharmacies will always require a prescription for Rybelsus, as it’s a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
