About Calprofen Oral Suspension

Calprofen Oral Suspension is a strawberry-flavoured liquid medicine containing ibuprofen 100mg per 5ml. As a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), it is specifically formulated to provide fast-acting relief from pain and fever in infants and children. It starts to work on a fever in as little as 15 minutes and can provide relief for up to 8 hours. Calprofen is suitable for children from 3 months (weighing over 5kg) up to 12 years of age and is available in two convenient sizes:

  • Calprofen Oral Suspension – 100ml
  • Calprofen Oral Suspension – 200ml

What Is Calprofen Oral Suspension Used For?

Calprofen is used to reduce high temperatures (fever), including post-immunisation fever. It also provides effective relief from mild to moderate pain such as teething, toothache, earache, sore throat, headache, and minor aches from sprains or strains.

Who Is Calprofen Suitable For?

Calprofen is suitable for children aged 3 months to 12 years who weigh more than 5kg.Do not give Calprofen to your child if they:

  • Are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin, or any other NSAIDs
  • Have ever had a stomach ulcer, perforation, or bleeding
  • Have severe heart, kidney, or liver failure
  • Are under 3 months old or weigh less than 5kg

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if the child:

  • Has asthma, diabetes, or high cholesterol
  • Has a history of gastrointestinal diseases (like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s)
  • Is dehydrated or has heart, liver, or kidney problems
  • Is taking other medicines, particularly other NSAIDs or anticoagulants

Ingredients

Other ingredients: Glycerol (E422), xanthan gum, maltitol (E965), polysorbate 80, saccharine sodium (E954), citric acid monohydrate, sodium methylhydroxybenzoate (E219), sodium propylhydroxybenzoate (E217), purified water, and strawberry flavour (containing propylene glycol).

How to Use Calprofen Oral Suspension

  1. Shake the bottle thoroughly for at least 10 seconds before use.
  2. Push the syringe firmly into the plug (hole) in the neck of the bottle.
  3. Turn the bottle upside down and gently pull the plunger to the correct mark on the syringe.
  4. Turn the bottle upright and remove the syringe.
  5. Place the end of the syringe into the child’s mouth and gently press the plunger to release the medicine.

For short-term use only. Do not use for more than 24 hours in infants aged 3-5 months, or more than 3 days in children aged 6 months and over, without consulting a doctor.

Possible Side Effects of Calprofen

Most children do not experience side effects, but possible ones include:

  • Stomach upset, indigestion, or heartburn
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache

Rare but serious side effects:

  • Allergic reactions (skin rash, wheezing, facial swelling)
  • Black, tarry stools or vomiting blood (signs of stomach bleeding)
  • Worsening of asthma

Warnings and Precautions

  • Do not exceed the stated dose for the child’s age/weight.
  • Always leave at least 4 hours between doses.
  • Contains maltitol; consult a doctor if your child has an intolerance to some sugars.
  • Ibuprofen may mask symptoms of infection; monitor the child closely.

Storage Instructions

  • Do not store above 25°C.
  • Keep the bottle in the original carton to protect from light.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date shown on the pack.
