Clotrimazole Pessary contains clotrimazole 500mg, an antifungal medicine used to treat vaginal thrush. It works by killing the fungus causing a yeast infection and relieving symptoms like itching, soreness, and abnormal vaginal discharge.

What is a Clotrimazole Pessary used for?

Clotrimazole Pessary 500mg is used to treat vaginal thrush (candidiasis), a fungal infection of the vagina and vulva. Thrush is one of the most common infections women experience, and it isn’t caused by poor hygiene.

It develops when a yeast called Candida grows more than usual. Candida lives in the vagina and other parts of the body without causing any symptoms, and the natural balance that keeps it under control can be upset by:

• Hormone changes, like your period, the contraceptive pill, pregnancy or the menopause
• Taking antibiotics
• Being unwell or run down
• Perfumed soaps and bath additives
• Tight clothing

As the yeast multiplies, thrush can cause:

• Persistent itching or burning around the vagina and vulva
• Redness, swelling or soreness of the vagina and vulva
• A whitish discharge that doesn’t smell

Symptoms vary from person to person. You may have several of these or only one of them.

How does a Clotrimazole 500mg Pessary work?

A Clotrimazole Pessary contains clotrimazole, which is an antifungal medicine. Thrush is a fungal infection, so it needs an antifungal treatment to clear the cause rather than something that only soothes the symptoms.

You insert the pessary into the vagina using the applicator provided, where it dissolves and releases clotrimazole directly onto the area affected by the infection. Clotrimazole works on the yeast cells themselves by stopping them from multiplying. This allows the infection to clear, and symptoms should be gone within three days of treatment.

Because the treatment is delivered straight to the site of the infection, only a small amount of clotrimazole is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Who can use Clotrimazole Vaginal Thrush Pessary ?

A Clotrimazole Pessary is suitable for adult women treating vaginal thrush. It isn’t suitable for anyone under 16, and at Click2Pharmacy, we can only supply it to women aged 18 and over.

However, Clotrimazole isn’t suitable for everyone, so you shouldn’t use it if you:

• Are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients in the pessary
• Are on your period, as the pessary can be washed out by your menstrual flow and may not work properly

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before treating yourself if you:

• Are having these symptoms for the first time and haven’t had thrush diagnosed before
• Have had more than two thrush infections in the last six months
• Are pregnant, or think you might be
• Are over 60
• Have had a sexually transmitted infection, or your partner has
• Have reacted badly to other vaginal antifungal treatments

Some symptoms need checking rather than treating as internal thrush. See your doctor if you have:

• Irregular vaginal bleeding, or any bleeding that isn’t your period
• Blood-stained discharge, or discharge that smells unpleasant
• Sores, blisters or ulcers on your vulva or inside your vagina
• Pain low down in your tummy, or pain when you pass urine
• A fever or chills
• Feeling or being sick, or diarrhoea

A dose of clotrimazole can be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, but check with your doctor or midwife first. In pregnancy, the pessary should be inserted gently with your fingers rather than with the applicator.

How to Use Clotrimazole 500mg Pessary

Use the pessary at night, just before you go to sleep, so it has time to dissolve while you’re lying down. Wash your hands before you start and again once you’ve finished.

1. Take the applicator out of the packaging and pull the plunger, with the lock attached, out of the applicator.
2. Remove the pessary from the foil blister and place it into the open end of the applicator with the curved edge facing down. Push the plunger and lock into the applicator until you feel a click.
3. Once you’ve felt the click, remove the lock from the plunger.
4. Lie on your back with your knees bent up, then insert the applicator into your vagina as deep as is comfortable, up to the patterned grip zone.
5. Hold the applicator by the grip zone and push the plunger all the way in until it stops. This releases the pessary as high as possible in the vagina.
6. Remove the applicator and throw it away somewhere safe, out of the reach of children. It can’t be flushed down the toilet.

It helps to wear a panty liner while the pessary dissolves. You may notice a white, chalky residue afterwards, which is normal and doesn’t mean the treatment hasn’t worked. If you notice pieces of undissolved pessary, speak to your doctor or pharmacist, as the treatment may not have worked properly.

If your symptoms haven’t improved within seven days, speak to your doctor.

 Clotrimazole Thrush Treatment Cream Side Effects

Like all medications, Clotrimazole thrush treatment can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most affect the area you’re treating and settle on their own.

After the pessary is inserted, you might notice:

Common Side Effects

• Local irritation, burning, or stinging
• Mild abdominal or pelvic discomfort

Uncommon Side Effects

• Allergic reactions such as rash or swelling

If you’re allergic to the pessary, the reaction is likely to happen soon after you have used it.

Stop using it and tell your doctor straight away or contact your nearest A&E, if any redness, burning, pain, itching or swelling gets worse or if you notice:

• A rash
• Swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue
• Problems swallowing or breathing
• Weakness, dizziness or feeling faint
• Feeling sick

Clotrimazole Pessary Ingredients

Active ingredient: clotrimazole 500mg.

Other ingredients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, lactic acid, maize starch, crospovidone, calcium lactate pentahydrate, magnesium stearate, colloidal anhydrous silica and hypromellose.

Each pack contains one white pessary sealed in a foil blister, along with an applicator for inserting it.

Clotrimazole Pessary with Applicator Warnings & Precautions

• Consult a doctor if symptoms persist beyond 7 days.
• Clotrimazole can damage latex, so it may stop condoms and diaphragms from working properly. Use another form of contraception for at least five days after using the pessary.
• Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you’re taking, including tacrolimus or sirolimus, or anything bought without a prescription.
• Avoid vaginal intercourse while you have thrush and while you’re using the treatment, as the infection can be passed to your partner.
• Don’t use tampons, vaginal douches, spermicides or any other vaginal products while you’re using the pessary.
• The pessary is a tablet for use in the vagina only. Don’t put it in your mouth or swallow it. If it’s swallowed by accident, contact your doctor straight away or go to your nearest A&E.
