Uses for Elocon Cream

Elocon is a steroid cream usually prescribed for psoriasis, dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin disorders. Common uses for Elocon Cream include managing symptoms like redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort caused by these conditions. Its effectiveness in reducing inflammation and irritation makes it a versatile treatment option for a wide range of skin issues.

How does Elocon Steroid Cream work?

Elocon contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate, a strong corticosteroid that helps break the inflammation part of the cycle in skin conditions. It reduces redness, swelling, and itching, making Elocon Cream one of the best initial treatments for moderate to severe eczema.

Elocon Cream Max Dosage

Typically, using Elocon Cream involves applying a thin layer to the affected inflamed skin once daily. Avoid using the cream on your face for more than 5 days or on large body areas for extended periods unless advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Who can use Elocon Cream?

Elocon Cream is suitable for adults and children over the age of 2 who need treatment for conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis. However, at Click2Pharmacy, we can only prescribe Elocon Cream to adults over the age of 18.

Elocon should not be used by individuals who have:

  • An allergy to mometasone furoate or any of the other ingredients in the cream
  • Skin infections such as cold sores, chickenpox, or shingles
  • Rosacea, acne, or other skin conditions not treated by corticosteroids
  • Ulcers, wounds, or broken skin
  • Genital itching or nappy rash

Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist to ensure Elocon Cream is safe and appropriate for your specific condition.

How To Use Elocon Cream

Follow these steps to apply Elocon Cream safely and effectively:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the cream to prevent bacteria from getting into the skin.
  2. Apply a thin layer of Elocon Cream to the affected skin area once a day.
  3. Gently rub the cream into the skin until it is fully absorbed.
  4. Avoid covering the treated area with bandages or plasters.
  5. Wash your hands again after applying the cream to remove any residue and prevent it from spreading to other areas.

Always follow your pharmacist or doctor’s instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Overuse of Elocon Cream

Using Elocon Cream for longer than advised or in large amounts increases the risk of side effects, including adverse effects related to steroid withdrawal. These symptoms can include redness, burning, intense itching, peeling, and even the drying out of the skin due to the loss of natural skin oils.

Overuse of Elocon Cream can also lead to more severe conditions, such as oozing sores and extreme sensitivity, including in extreme cases where the withdrawal reaction appears more severe than the original condition.

To minimise these risks, always use small amounts of Elocon Cream as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you notice any of these symptoms, stop using it immediately and consult your healthcare provider for further advice and management.

Side Effects of Elocon Cream

While many people use Elocon Cream without any issues, side effects that may occur include:

  • Redness or irritation at the application site
  • Thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Burning, stinging, or itching
  • Excessive hair growth in treated areas
  • Acne-like breakouts
  • Loss of skin colour
  • Small blood vessels becoming visible under the skin

Serious Side Effects

If you experience severe side effects, such as blurred vision or signs of an allergic reaction (such as rash, itching, or swelling), stop using Elocon Cream and call NHS 111 or go to A&E immediately. For a full list of side effects, please read the Elocon Cream Patient Information Leaflet.

Reporting Elocon Cream Side Effects

If you notice any side effects, inform your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are not listed here. You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme. Reporting helps to improve the understanding of this medication’s safety.

Elocon Cream Alternatives

If Elocon Cream is unsuitable for you, alternatives are available from our Eczema and Dermatitis Treatment Clinic. These include other topical corticosteroids like Hydrocortisone for milder symptoms or high-strength options like Betamethasone for more severe cases. Non-steroidal treatments, such as emollients, may also be effective depending on your condition.

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before switching treatments to ensure the alternative is appropriate for your specific condition and needs.

Elocon Cream FAQs

You should speak to your midwife or doctor before using Elocon Cream if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

No, Elocon Cream is a prescription-only medication. When you purchase this medicine from Click2Pharmacy, you will fill out a short online consultation which will be reviewed by one of our licensed pharmacists, who will check if this medication is suitable for you.

You may notice improvements in your skin condition within a few days of the initial treatment with Elocon Cream. Continue using the cream as prescribed by your pharmacist or doctor to ensure full effectiveness.

We do not advise using Elocon on the face for more than 5 days. Always follow your doctor’s instructions when using it on facial skin.

Yes, Elocon Cream is a steroid. Specifically, it is a strong topical corticosteroid that is used to reduce inflammation, redness, and itching associated with various skin conditions.

No, Elocon Cream is not an antibiotic. It is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory skin conditions, but it does not treat infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.

Elocon Cream should not be used on skin infections like cold sores, chickenpox, or shingles. It should also not be applied to open wounds, ulcers, or broken skin. Additionally, avoid using it on the face for more than 5 days, around the mouth, or near the eyes.

No, Elocon Cream should not be used for thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection, and Elocon Cream is a steroid, not an antifungal treatment. Using it on a fungal infection like thrush could potentially make the condition worse. You can buy thrush treatments from our Thrush Medication & Treatment Clinic.

Elocon Cream can be used to reduce the inflammation and itching caused by insect bites. However, it should only be used as directed by your doctor or pharmacist and is only recommended when other milder treatments haven’t worked.

Elocon Cream is not typically recommended for treating acne. In fact, using a potent corticosteroid like Elocon on acne-prone skin can sometimes worsen the condition by causing thinning of the skin or other side effects. There are more suitable treatments available specifically for acne from our Acne Medication & Treatment Clinic.

The choice between Elocon Cream and Ointment depends on your skin condition and treatment area. Elocon Cream is lighter and less greasy, ideal for moist or large areas, including the face or skin folds. Elocon Ointment is thicker, creating a barrier that retains moisture, best for very dry, scaly, or thickened skin but can feel greasier. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you choose the best option for your needs.

Elocon Scalp Lotion is better for scalp use than Elocon Cream due to its lighter, non-greasy formulation that absorbs quickly and is easier to apply, especially in hairy areas. Elocon Cream is thicker and less suitable for the scalp.

Yes, Elocon Cream can cause skin thinning or lightening, especially if you use it for a long time. Thinning skin means it can become more fragile and easier to damage. Skin lightening can happen when the cream reduces the amount of pigment in the skin, causing lighter patches.

To avoid these issues, use Elocon Cream exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Don’t apply it to large areas of skin for too long, and avoid using it on sensitive areas like the face unless your pharmacist or doctor says it’s okay.
