Enstilar cutaneous foam is a topical treatment used to treat plaque psoriasis in adults. Psoriasis is a skin condition where the overproduction of skin cells causes patches of red, scaly and thickened skin, also known as plaque psoriasis.
Enstilar foam contains two active ingredients, calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate, which work together to manage the symptoms of plaque psoriasis.
Calcipotriol is a synthetic form of vitamin D. In psoriasis, skin cells are produced far more quickly than normal, building up into the thick, scaly plaques associated with the condition. Calcipotriol works by slowing this overproduction, helping to normalise the rate of skin cell growth.
Betamethasone dipropionate is a potent corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation caused by psoriasis. It works by suppressing the immune response in the skin, calming redness, swelling and irritation.
Together, the two ingredients address both the cellular and inflammatory components of plaque psoriasis.
Enstilar foam is suitable for adults aged 18 and over affected by psoriasis vulgaris.

Apply Enstilar foam spray once daily to affected areas on the body and scalp. It may be more convenient to apply in the evening. The normal treatment period is 4 weeks, though your doctor may advise a different duration.
Enstilar should only be used on skin affected by psoriasis. Don’t wash the treated area immediately after application. Let the foam remain on the skin or scalp during the day or overnight for best results.
Once your psoriasis has cleared or almost cleared, your doctor may tell you to use Enstilar twice weekly on two non-consecutive days to maintain results.
Like all medicines, Enstilar foam may cause side effects, though not everyone gets them.

Enstilar foam may increase the risk of side effects if used for a long time, under dressings, in skin folds, or on large areas of skin:
Side effects may include thinning of the skin, stretch marks, more visible blood vessels, changes in hair growth, perioral dermatitis, sensitivity to light, itchy skin rash and worsening of psoriasis.
Stop using Enstilar foam and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the serious side effects listed above.

Enstilar contains a potent corticosteroid called betamethasone dipropionate. Topical steroids are grouped into four categories: mild, moderately potent, potent and very potent. Betamethasone sits in the potent category. Your doctor will have prescribed it because it’s appropriate for your condition.
Treatment with Enstilar takes time to show results. Most people start to see an improvement within the first few weeks. The treatment of plaque psoriasis varies between individuals, so continue using the foam as prescribed even if results feel slow. If you haven’t seen improvement after 4 weeks, speak to your doctor.
Enstilar foam can be used on the scalp to treat psoriasis vulgaris. It should not be used on the face. The skin on the face is more sensitive to steroids and there’s a greater risk of side effects such as skin thinning. If you have psoriasis on your face, speak to your doctor about other treatment options.
Enstilar foam can be used on psoriasis affecting the elbows and knees. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and gently rub the foam in until absorbed.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you’re using before starting Enstilar foam, particularly other topical steroids or calcipotriol-containing products. Your doctor will advise if Enstilar foam can be used alongside any other psoriasis treatments.
As a general precaution, avoid applying other topical products to the same area at the same time, as this may affect absorption. If you’d like to use an emollient or moisturiser as part of your skincare routine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice on timing and application.
Itching associated with psoriasis is caused by inflammation and the betamethasone in Enstilar foam helps reduce the inflammation caused by psoriasis. Many people find that itching improves as the psoriasis itself responds to treatment.
Note that skin irritation, including itching, is also listed as a possible side effect of Enstilar foam. If itching worsens after starting treatment, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Enstilar foam contains paraffin-based ingredients that may leave a greasy residue on fabric. Avoid contact with textiles that are easily stained by grease, such as silk, after applying the foam. Washing may reduce product build-up on fabric but won’t remove it entirely.
Some skin irritation, including redness, itching, burning or stinging at the application site, is a known side effect of Enstilar foam. If irritation is mild, you can try applying the foam a little less frequently. If irritation persists or worsens, stop using the foam and speak to your doctor or pharmacist. Stop using immediately and seek medical attention if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the skin, face or mouth.
