About Femodette Contraceptive Pill

Femodette is a combined oral contraceptive pill that contains two female hormones: ethinylestradiol 20 micrograms (oestrogen) and gestodene 75 micrograms (progestogen). It is used to prevent pregnancy when taken correctly.

Femodette works by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg, thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the womb, and thinning the lining of the uterus to reduce the chance of implantation.

Femodette is a 21-day pill, meaning one tablet is taken daily for 21 days followed by a 7-day pill-free break.

Femodette is used for reliable long-term pregnancy prevention. When taken correctly, it is one of the most effective reversible methods of contraception. It may also make periods more regular, lighter, and less painful.

Who Is Femodette Suitable For?

Femodette may be suitable for women who wish to use a combined hormonal contraceptive.

Do not use Femodette if you:

• Have or have ever had a blood clot (DVT or pulmonary embolism)
• Have had a heart attack, stroke, or angina
• Have migraine with aura
• Have liver disease or liver tumours
• Have breast cancer or have had it before
• Are allergic to any of the ingredients

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

• Smoke and are over 35 years old
• Have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
• Have migraines or are overweight
• Have recently given birth

How to Take Femodette Contraceptive Pill

1. Take one tablet daily at the same time each day.
2. Follow the arrows on the blister strip.
3. Take tablets for 21 consecutive days.
4. Have a 7-day pill-free break after finishing the strip.
5. Start the next strip after 7 days, even if bleeding continues.

If you miss a pill by less than 12 hours, take it as soon as you remember and continue as normal. If more than 12 hours late, additional contraception such as condoms is required for 7 days.

Possible Side Effects of Femodette

Common side effects:

• Nausea
• Headache
• Weight gain
• Breast tenderness
• Mood changes

Uncommon:

• Vomiting
• Fluid retention
• Migraine
• Skin rash

Rare but serious:

• Blood clots in the legs or lungs
• Stroke or heart attack
• Severe liver problems

Warnings and Precautions

• Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
• Higher risk of blood clots, especially in the first year of use.
• Smoking increases the risk of serious side effects.
• Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
