About Maloff Protect

Maloff Protect contains atovaquone 250mg and proguanil hydrochloride 100mg, two antimalarial medicines that work together to prevent malaria. It is used by adults travelling to regions where malaria is present and helps protect against infection caused by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

Maloff Protect works by stopping the malaria parasite from multiplying in the bloodstream after being transmitted by mosquito bites. For effective protection, it must be taken before, during, and after travel, alongside bite-avoidance measures such as insect repellent and mosquito nets.

Maloff Protect tablets are suitable for adults weighing 40 kg or more and are available in the 24 tablets pack size.

What Is Maloff Protect Used For?

Maloff Protect is used to prevent malaria in adults travelling to malaria-risk regions. It helps kill the malaria parasite after infection and reduces the risk of developing malaria when taken correctly.

How Does Maloff Protect Work?

Maloff Protect helps prevent malaria by targeting the Plasmodium falciparum parasite transmitted through mosquito bites. Its active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil, work together to stop the parasite from multiplying and eliminate it before it can cause infection. Atovaquone disrupts the parasite’s energy production, while proguanil enhances its effect and prevents parasite growth inside red blood cells.

How Long Does Maloff Protect Take to Work?

Maloff Protect starts working from the first dose but requires at least one day to provide full protection. For effective malaria prevention, it should be taken daily during travel and continued for 7 days after leaving the malaria-risk area.

How Effective Is Maloff Protect?

Clinical studies show that atovaquone/proguanil is up to 95.8% effective at preventing malaria. For maximum protection, Maloff Protect should be used alongside mosquito precautions such as insect repellent, bed nets, and protective clothing, as no anti-malaria medication offers 100% protection.

Who Is Maloff Protect Suitable For?

Maloff Protect is suitable for adults aged 18 years and over who weigh at least 40 kg.

Do not take Maloff Protect if you:

  • Are allergic to atovaquone, proguanil, or any ingredients
  • Have kidney disease or liver disease

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive
  • Have epilepsy, depression, or tuberculosis
  • Have previously reacted to antimalarial medicines
  • Are taking medicines such as warfarin, metoclopramide, rifampicin, or HIV treatments

How to Take Maloff Protect

  1. Take one tablet once daily at the same time each day.
  2. Swallow whole with food or a milky drink.
  3. Begin 1–2 days before travel to a malaria-risk area.
  4. Continue daily during your stay.
  5. Continue for 7 days after returning.

If you vomit within one hour of taking a dose, take another tablet immediately.
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

How Many Maloff Protect Tablets Do I Need?

The number of Maloff Protect tablets you need depends on how long you’ll be staying in a malaria-risk area. Each pack already includes the 9 extra tablets required to complete your course — 2 before travel and 7 after leaving the area.

Use the guide below to choose the correct quantity for your trip:

  • 1–15 days: 24 tablets
  • 16–27 days: 36 tablets
  • 28–39 days: 48 tablets
  • 40–51 days: 60 tablets
  • 52–63 days: 72 tablets
  • 64–84 days: 96 tablets

This ensures you have enough tablets to cover your entire trip and post-travel protection.
