What is Atovaquone and Proguanil?
Atovaquone and Proguanil is a combination medication used to prevent and treat malaria. Malaria is a serious disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of an infected mosquito. This medication combines two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil, which work together to kill the parasites and prevent them from multiplying in the blood.
What are Atovaquone and Proguanil used for?
Atovaquone and Proguanil are primarily used to prevent and treat malaria. They are not used for treating acne. However, they may be prescribed for other conditions as determined by a doctor.
How do Atovaquone and Proguanil work?
Atovaquone and Proguanil work by interfering with the life cycle of the malaria parasite. Atovaquone inhibits the parasite’s mitochondrial electron transport, which is essential for energy production. Proguanil, on the other hand, inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme necessary for the parasite’s DNA synthesis. Together, these actions prevent the parasite from multiplying and spreading in the blood, effectively treating and preventing malaria.
Who are Atovaquone and Proguanil suitable for?
Atovaquone and Proguanil are suitable for adults and children who need to prevent or treat malaria. However, they may not be suitable for everyone. People with severe kidney or liver problems, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those allergic to any of the ingredients should not take this medication. Always consult a doctor or pharmacist before starting any new medication.
