Omacor Capsules 1000mg are a high-concentration omega-3 acid ethyl esters supplement used to treat certain heart and blood fat (lipid) conditions. Omacor contains purified fish oils, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is primarily prescribed to lower high triglyceride levels in the blood and can also be used alongside other treatments to help prevent further heart problems after a myocardial infarction (heart attack).

What Is Omacor Used For?

Omacor is used for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia (excessive fat levels in the blood) when dietary changes alone have not worked. It is also indicated as an adjuvant treatment for secondary prevention following a heart attack, helping to reduce the risk of further cardiovascular events when used in combination with standard therapies like statins or antiplatelets.

Who Is Omacor Suitable For?

Omacor is suitable for adults over the age of 18 who require lipid-lowering therapy or post-myocardial infarction support.

Do not use Omacor Capsules if you:

• Are allergic to the active ingredient, soya, or any of the other ingredients

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

• Have an upcoming surgery (due to increased bleeding time)
• Have liver problems (your doctor will need to monitor your liver function)
• Have kidney problems
• Have poorly controlled diabetes
• Are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) like Warfarin
• Are over the age of 70

Ingredients

Other ingredients: Alpha-tocopherol (antioxidant). Capsule shell: Gelatin, glycerol, purified water, medium-chain triglycerides, lecithin (soya).

How to Take Omacor Capsules

1. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water.
2. Do not crush or chew the capsules.
3. Taking the capsules at meal times helps to prevent indigestion or a fishy aftertaste.
4. Follow the exact dosage prescribed by your doctor.

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a forgotten one.

Possible Side Effects of Omacor

Common side effects:

• Stomach upsets and indigestion (dyspepsia)
• Nausea (feeling sick)

Uncommon:

• Dizziness or altered taste
• Abdominal pain or constipation
• Gastroenteritis

Rare:

• Allergic reactions (skin rash or hives)
• High blood sugar levels

Very rare side effects may include low blood pressure, nasal dryness, or itchy skin rashes.

Warnings and Precautions

• Soya Allergy: Omacor contains soybean oil. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to peanut or soya.
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: You should not take Omacor unless absolutely necessary and directed by your doctor.
• Bleeding Risk: Patients with a high risk of haemorrhage should be monitored.
• Keep out of reach of children.

Storage Instructions

• Do not store above 25°C.
• Do not freeze.
• Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
• Do not use after the expiry date.
