Omacor is a medicine used to lower high levels of triglycerides in adults. Triglycerides are a type of fat carried in your blood, and having too much is known as hypertriglyceridaemia.
Omacor is taken alongside changes to your diet when diet alone hasn’t brought your blood fat levels down enough. Depending on the type of raised blood fats you have, it can be taken on its own or alongside a statin when a statin hasn’t controlled your triglycerides. Omacor Capsules 1000mg come in a pack of 28 capsules.
Omacor contains two omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
These fatty acids reduce the amount of triglycerides your liver makes. They also help your liver break down more fatty acids, which leaves less available to build new triglycerides. Together, these effects help lower the level of triglycerides carried in your blood.
Omacor is suitable for adults aged 18 and over with high triglyceride levels. It isn’t recommended for children and teenagers.

The usual starting dose is two capsules a day. If your triglyceride levels don’t come down enough, your doctor may increase this to four capsules a day.

Active ingredient: Omega-3-acid ethyl esters 90 (1000mg per capsule), made up of 460mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ethyl ester and 380mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl ester.
Other ingredients: Alpha-tocopherol (as an antioxidant, mixed with a vegetable oil such as soya oil), gelatine, glycerol, purified water, medium-chain triglycerides and lecithin (soya).
There isn’t enough information on Omacor being used during pregnancy, so it shouldn’t be taken unless your doctor feels it’s clearly needed. It’s not known if Omacor passes into breast milk, so it shouldn’t be used while you’re breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you’re pregnant, think you might be or are planning a baby.
Omacor can slightly increase bleeding time, which matters if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin. Your blood clotting will need to be checked when you start or stop Omacor, and your anticoagulant dose may need adjusting. Speak to your doctor before starting Omacor if you take any medicine that affects blood clotting.
