About Optilast Eye Drops

Optilast Eye Drops contain azelastine hydrochloride, an antihistamine used to treat allergic conjunctivitis. They help relieve symptoms caused by pollen, dust mites, and animal hair by blocking the effects of histamine and reducing inflammation in the eyes.

Optilast provides relief from itching and watering of the eyes associated with seasonal and perennial allergies. It is suitable for adults and for children depending on the type of allergy (age restrictions apply).

What are Optilast Eye Drops Used For?

Optilast is used to treat and prevent symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, including itching and watering of the eyes.
It is suitable for:

  • Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hayfever) in adults and children aged 4 years and above
  • Perennial allergic conjunctivitis (allergy to dust mites or animal hair) in adults and children aged 12 years and above

Optilast is not suitable for treating eye infections.

Who are Optilast Eye Drops Suitable For?

Optilast is suitable for adults, and for children depending on age and allergy type.

Do not use Optilast if you:

  • Are allergic to azelastine hydrochloride or any ingredient
  • Have eye symptoms that affect only one eye
  • Have impaired vision or eye pain
  • Have symptoms that worsen or do not improve within 48 hours

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using Optilast if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How to Use Optilast Eye Drops

  1. Wash your hands before use.
  2. Pull down the lower eyelid.
  3. Instil 1 drop into each eye in the morning and evening.
  4. If symptoms are severe, your doctor may recommend up to 4 doses daily.
  5. Press the inner corner of the eye after instilling the drop to reduce draining.
  6. Replace contact lenses 15 minutes after using the drops.

If possible, use Optilast regularly until symptoms have resolved.
Do not use Optilast for more than 6 weeks without medical advice.

Possible Side Effects of Optilast Eye Drops

Like all medicines, Optilast can cause side effects.

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Slight eye irritation (burning, itching, watering) after application

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

  • A bitter taste in the mouth

Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):

  • Allergic reaction such as rash or itching

Seek medical advice if side effects persist or worsen.

Warnings and Precautions

  • For eye use only.
  • Remove contact lenses before use and wait 15 minutes before replacing them.
  • Benzalkonium chloride may cause eye irritation or discolour soft lenses.
  • Do not use if you are unsure whether your symptoms are caused by allergies.
  • Stop use and seek advice if symptoms do not improve within 48 hours.

Storage Instructions

  • No special storage conditions required.
  • Use within 4 weeks of opening.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Ingredients

Active ingredient: Azelastine hydrochloride 0.5 mg/ml (0.05%).
Other ingredients: Benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, hypromellose, liquid sorbitol (crystallising), sodium hydroxide, water for injections.
