About Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg Film-coated Tablets

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is an antibiotic (antibacterial medicine) for treating infections. It belongs to a group of antibiotics called “Penicillins”. It works by killing the bacteria that can cause infections and can also be used to prevent infections.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is prescribed for:

• Bacterial infections of the ear, throat, lungs, skin, and soft tissues.
• Preventing recurring rheumatic fever or chorea (infection of the nervous system).
• Preventing infection in patients without a spleen (abdominal organ).
• Preventing pneumococcal infection, such as in patients with sickle cell disease.

What Are Phenoxymethylpenicillin Tablets Used For?

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is used to:

• Kill bacteria that cause infections in the ears, throat, lungs, and skin.
• Prevent infections from recurring, such as rheumatic fever or chorea.
• Provide long-term protection against pneumococcal infection in high-risk patients.

Who Are Phenoxymethylpenicillin Tablets Suitable For?

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is suitable for adults and children who have been prescribed this antibiotic for a bacterial infection or for infection prevention.

Do not take Phenoxymethylpenicillin if you:

• Are allergic to phenoxymethylpenicillin or any other ingredients in these tablets.
• Have a known allergy to penicillin or other penicillin-type medicines.

Seek medical advice before use if you have:

• Kidney or liver problems.
• Any blood disorders.
• Asthma or a tendency to develop allergic conditions like hay fever or eczema.
• Persistent diarrhoea or vomiting that may affect how the medicine is absorbed.
• Are on a low potassium diet (each tablet contains 28 mg of potassium).
• Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

How to Use Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg Tablets

1. Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.
2. Swallow each dose with a drink of water.
3. Take tablets on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food.
4. Space the doses as early as possible throughout the day.
5. The usual adult dose is 250mg or 500mg every 6 hours depending on the infection.
6. If you miss a dose, carry on with the next one as normal; do not take a double dose.
7. Continue taking the tablets for the full time of treatment, even if you feel better.

Possible Side Effects of Phenoxymethylpenicillin

Common or possible side effects:

• Upset stomach, nausea, or vomiting.
• Soft stools.
• Thrush (yeast infection) or black hairy tongue.
• Inflammation of the tongue or mouth.

Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent help if you experience:

• An allergic reaction (shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the lips, face, or tongue).
• Severe bloody diarrhoea (pseudomembranous colitis).
• Peeling or blistering of the skin.
• Seizures (fits).
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

Warnings and Precautions

• This medicine may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives (“the pill”).
• Guar gum (thickening agent in food) can reduce the absorption of penicillin.
• Inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, gout medication, or other antibiotics.
• This medication may cause a false positive result in non-enzymatic urine glucose tests.

Storage Instructions

• Do not store above 25°C.
• Store in the original packaging to protect the tablets.
• Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
• Do not use after the expiry date (EXP) stated on the blister or carton.
