About Cimizt Contraceptive Pill

Cimizt is a combined oral contraceptive pill (often referred to as “the pill”) used to prevent pregnancy. Each film-coated tablet contains two types of female sex hormones: desogestrel (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). What Is Cimizt Contraceptive Pills Used For?

Cimizt is primarily used as a hormonal contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. It is over 99% effective when taken correctly. It works through three main actions:

  1. Prevents Ovulation: It stops the ovaries from releasing an egg each month.
  2. Thickens Cervical Mucus: This makes it difficult for sperm to enter the womb.
  3. Thins the Womb Lining: This makes it harder for a fertilised egg to implant and grow.

Additionally, many women find Cimizt helps make their periods lighter, more regular, and less painful.

Who Is Cimizt Contraceptive Pills Suitable For?

Cimizt is suitable for most healthy women of childbearing age. Do not use Cimizt if you:

  • Have (or have ever had) a blood clot in a blood vessel of your legs (DVT), lungs (PE), or other organs.
  • Have a disorder affecting blood clotting (e.g., Protein C deficiency).
  • Have ever had a heart attack, stroke, or angina.
  • Have “migraine with aura.”
  • Have severe diabetes with blood vessel damage.
  • Have very high blood pressure or very high levels of blood fats.
  • Have or have had breast or genital cancer.
  • Have severe liver disease or liver tumours.

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Smoke (especially if over 35).
  • Are overweight (BMI over 30).
  • Have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • Have depression or mood swings.
  • Are scheduled for an operation or will be off your feet for a long time.

How to Take Cimizt

  1. Take one tablet daily, ideally at the same time each day, with a drink of water.
  2. Follow the direction of the arrows on the pack; each tablet is marked with the day of the week.
  3. Take the tablets for 21 days until the strip is empty.
  4. Have a 7-day break where you take no tablets. You will likely experience a “withdrawal bleed” during this week.
  5. Start your next pack on the 8th day, even if you are still bleeding.

If you miss a pill by more than 12 hours, or if you vomit/have severe diarrhoea shortly after taking a pill, refer to the Patient Information Leaflet as your contraceptive protection may be reduced.
